It’s my girlfriend’s birthday tomorrow, and while our front garden is beautifully finished in Indian sandstone and raised sleeper beds, it’s also well established with plants and trees and there’s no space for veg or fruit beds.

Kinja'd!!!

So, ta-dah! I’ve made some crates out of pallet wood and rustic-ified them a bit, a basic frame for climbers/tomatoes, and put together a little patio starter kit with traditional wooden trug, some hardy toms, mini fork, labels, dibber, veg seeds, copper tape and a wild gorse candle. Insta-smallspacegrowkit.

Kinja'd!!!

We’re both keen gardeners (in business and free time) so I’m hoping this is right up her street.

Any other gardening/landscaping Oppos?

That looks amazing. I don’t have any room for gardening where I live, but I helped my Step dad put up a Greenhouse recently... I can grow me own chilis and tomatoes now :)

Ah man, I wish we had space for a greenhouse :( tomatoes don’t get much better than those baked on the vine

I do all of my gardening is the finest "homer" buckets on my balcony. It's a classy operation.

Worked at a nursery for 9 years and have much more respect for the plants than the customers. Stuff looks awesome. I might get back into it professionally soon and get my horticulturalist certification.

I have to say, I sort of fell into horticulture accidentally, and now couldn’t imagine doing much else. You obviously enjoyed it, did the nursery specialise in anything in particular?

I hope you drilled holes. Do what you can where you can, if not for yourself then do it for the bees!

Of course! I grew up with a huge garden on a farm, a suburban apartment wasn’t going to keep be from having at least a few fresh veggies!

I'm in Chicago and it keeps getting cold so I haven't planted my stuff outside yet this year though.

While in NH we grew our own chrysanthemums and poinsettias that I did a lot of work for, but I sold all sorts of trees and shrubs too. Really liked being able to help someone find the right plant for a spot or teach them how to maintain it.

On Cape Cod, I did a lot of evergreen trees and native plants (magnolias, cedar, hydrangeas, birch, azaleas, etc.). The native plants were really interesting to me and I definitely have a greater appreciation for the plants I see everyday.

Overall I actually liked learning the latin names. It helps to know what things are at least loosely related to.

Good effort. Could you build a little cold frame, or have you got nice big windows in your apartment?!

As of right now, Mrs. BaconSandwich and I live in a basement suite, so the only gardening we are doing is in pots. We have some dill, a tomato, some peppers, a few sugar snap peas, green onions, and a few other random things. An elderly lady who lives a few blocks away is letting us use some of her garden space, which we’ve loaded full of cucumbers, and we’ve planted some potatoes in the front flowerbed of the in-laws.
