!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! coupe is the definition of a cream puff ... it’s even cream colored! I love a nice “personal luxury coupe”, and if this was the following generation Delta 88 coupe, like the ‘84 my mom had when I was a kid, I’d probably try to buy it. With less than 43k on the clock, it certainly commands a premium, but this much premium? I don’t know about that.
It’s been sitting on the dealership’s front lawn for a couple weeks with a price of $4,998, and I think maybe that’s a decent price, although probably a little steep. Their own pictures show a price $5,998 on the windows. Why their website lists the price at $7,999, who knows? Maybe that’s just the way a stealership does it.
Make no mistake, this is a stealership. In the listing it has this insidious little bit:
All pre-owned vehicles are subject to a $995 reconditioning fee that includes a one-year maintenance package, two-year interior warranty against rips and stains, Vin Etch, multi-point inspection, and lifetime of free car washes.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!
Another location of the same dealership recently leased my ex-sister-in-law a new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and among other things sold her a $750 rust proofing package. Yes, you read that right, she was dumb enough to pay $750 to rust proof a leased vehicle. Can’t make that shit up!

How can you lease a minivan? I assume she has children? She’ll be better off buying it at the end of the lease just from the damage.

I am kind of on the fence I want to say NP, it looks to be in really good shape. There are definitely better cars out there for $5k. But there might not be many that are cooler.
At $8k ya, they can pound sand.
EDIT: if this was a Coupe de Ville NP all day.

Oh yeah, if it was a Coupe de Ville, I might even try to deal with those guys!

It’s not the first time she was dumb enough to lease a minivan and trash it. She is impossibly stupid! I sincerely doubt she’ll have enough credit to buy the thing at the end of the lease. The house is about to get foreclosed on, and she has a mountain of credit card debt.

I an mot going to lie, if it was a Coupe De Ville there is a very high chance I would buy it over the phone, and pick it up next week when I fly to Illinois. I have no idea where I would keep it until I get there and where I would store until we actually move there but I think I could figure it out.

According to the VIN it’s A true Olds TreeFiddy under the hood. There’s a bonus.
$5k isn’t bad. I’d have to paint it Black and toss some Cragars on it though.

Sorry, but that’s a ‘77 Ninety Eight. I had a ‘77 Delta 88 and that, sir, is no Delta 88. :D

For $5k, this is a great way to get into the collector car hobby. Sure, it’s ugly, slow, and drives like a boat, but it’s rare to see one in this good a condition in this day and age. It’s also probably a great way to learn the basics of car maintenance, what with the miles of vacuum tubes under the hood, but no 40 year old circuit boards that have be maintained.
Also, if that 350 ever dies, slip a 455 with a quiet exhaust under the hood and haul some ass.

Where in Illinois are you headed?

Man... that sounds rough. I feel bad for the kids. And I suppose she isn’t open to taking some drastic measures to cut costs (like cancelling things like cable TV) and/or raise income (like renting out a room), eh?

Next week I will be in Paris, it’s a little cornfield town close to Champaign. When we move there in July we will be in Carbondale.

A true Olds TreeFiddy?
Is your real name Abe Simpson?

$5k is CP on this by about $3k. Even with the low mileage.

I know where Paris is. I went to college in Champaign, and used to wander around in the country frequently.

That’s not a Delta 88, that’s a 98 Regency. Completely different car, and no I’m not joking. The 88 was built on the shared chassis with the Caprice and had smaller everything, while the 98 shared a chassis with the largest Cadillacs. The 88 could be had with a 307 Olds, a diesel, and even (bleh) various Chevy engines. The 88 also got light-duty transmissions (generally a TH-350). The 98 was the biggest car GM built at the time, even after it was downsized for 1977. Probably has a 350 Olds engine, though many clowns were convinced they had a 403... Almost definitely has a TH-400.
Fun fact: the window sticker on this car would have said something like “This car was built by Oldsmobile Division and has an engine built by Oldsmobile Division”. The lawyers made them do that. Turns out GM got sued for selling Pontiacs with Olds engines, Buicks with Pontiac engines, and Oldsmobiles with Chevy engines. I guess people weren’t ready for the 350 Olds, 350 Pontiac, and 350 Buick to all be replaced with the 350 Chevy. Dorks.
That being said, the 98 was a very nice car. This happens to be a yellower version of my first car, a 1977 that I bought back in 1995. Great interior, supremely quiet, 10-hooker trunk, able to do peg-leg burnouts all over town, then take grandma to church while towing a decent sized camper.

Yeah, somebody else pointed out that it is a 98, I edited it. I did not realize that it was on a completely separate chassis.
It is so weird looking back and seeing that GM made four completely seperate versions of a 350 cubic inch V8. My fun car is a ‘74 Buick Apollo, complete with a Buick 350.

That area is awesome for wandering around, I spent many hours doing just that in my youth.

I believe there was also a disclaimer in some ads that said something to the effect of “Oldsmobiles are equipped with Oldsmobile and other quality General Motors engines”. They were the division most affected by that controversy, since they had spent decades as GM’s engineering center and were known for high quality craftsmanship and pioneering technology. Loyal Olds buyers gagged at the thought of a blue collar Chevy engine under the hood.

Yeah, sorry for my rant-esque comment. I’m usually a pretty easy going guy but Oldsmobiles bring the d-bag fanboi out of me. I’ll calm down now :)
As for all the different engines, I like that they were all wacky! Adds variety! Also, your Buick engine is awesome. I always liked the Buick engine, with it’s weird oil pump and funky-wavey deck!

No worries! My first car was an Olds (‘89 Toronado Trofeo), so I’m always down for learning more about them.
I do love my Buick engine. It’s the easiest to tell apart, with it’s front mounted distributor. I even bought a book on how to rebuild them properly, you can make some decent streetable horsepower with them. Someday I shall build it beyond it’s 150hp factory rating :)
