I’ve just thought of a change California should implement in the name of fuel economy: get rid of front license plates.
If designers don’t have to design around them they could design a more slippery shape and on the cars that aren’t designed to accommodate them they won’t turn into wind pimples creating drag.

“I’ve just thought of a change all 50 states should implement in the name of fuel economy: get rid of front license plates.”
FTFY. Makes my GTO look buck-toothed.

Or Pennsylvannia.

Will. Never. Happen. The law enforcement community LOVES license plates. If they had their way, they would be mounted on all 4 sides of a car and be painted on the roof or trunk as well.

I agree that it should be all 50 states but I know California loves passing laws to suit their ideals no matter how unrealistic they may be.

OR.. They could just get rid of front plates everywhere in North America. They just kill the design on the front of the car:

But seriously screw Illinois.

Considering California has no problem releasing tons of convicted criminals I don’t think they would mind this.

At minimum they could at least allow for a decal front plate don’t you think?
Solves the fuel economy argument but still has the plate for the popo’s to catch you.

Oops, I thought you meant Michigan doesn't require front plates. I mean PA doesn't require front plates. :o

Michigan doesn’t.....which is awesome now that I live in Detroit. I grew up in Chicago though, and always HATED the front plate rule.

My cousins live in Chicago. Can confirm, is annoying. Although, it's not much worse than all the other states that require front plates.

CHP has blocked every attempt to eliminate the front plate

Most vehicles are not designed around having a front plate, and in my experience it does not factor into any aero/thermal/front end airflow simulations. Also, if anything, a flat surface blockage in the front end may even help your fuel economy. Look up the concept behind aero shutters or active grille shutters.
The front license plate bracket is designed to be dealer installed at the legal location (ex. 12” from ground in US) in regions that require it, and the front fascia is typically blind to that requirement.
I have no idea what Tesla specifically does, though.
