Yes... that is very disappointing. They’re definitely going in the wrong direction.

No good will come of this. Other states will follow. Even people who pass the test routinely suck at parallel parking....

You know what else is a dreaded part of the driving experience? Arbitrary speed limits. Let drop (raise) them too.

This is to decrease testing time and boost passing rates for the driving portion of the test. Bunchabullshit.

I got my driver’s license in 1982 in VA, and we were not required to parallel park. In fact, the entire test consisted of one lap around the ring road at the mall. But it all depends on where you live. When I got my license, we lived in a neighborhood with no off-street parking. I had to parallel park every time I drove. Here in TX where I live now, I think I parallel park maybe twice in a year.

I have so much rage at this right now. Words cannot even express.

I was born and raised just outside of Frederick, Maryland, spent most of my life there. But I’m so glad I moved. It just gets dumber and dumber and dumber.

I was born and raised in Maryland. I think I’ve parallel parked maybe 6 times in my entire life. I think it’s a good skill to have, and frankly if you’re not an idiot it’s not that hard to do. The space they give you during the test is extremely generous. So if someone can’t do it in the test, they deserve to fail because frankly I don’t want their dumbass on the road.

I am teaching my kids how to parallel park whether the state requires it or not.

Not on the Colorado test either. Hasn't been for decades.

I took my driver’s test in enfield Ct, 2009. I never had to parallel park for my test and not once during my 8 required hours of instructor driving did he ask me to parallel park. I mentioned this to my father once during the 50 mandated hours I had to drive with a family member (read; only my father). He made sure I knew how to parallel park properly in our honda pilot.

Now whenever I parallel park places my friends are always amazed, say something about how they would have ignored it and parked somewhere else. Its actually demoralizing how few of them know how to do it, but I’m thankful my father taught me in that hulk of a honda so now everything else is easy.

I hate this. I took my MD driver’s test back in 2009, and parallel parking took me a few times to get down, mainly because I learned to drive in a minivan, and took the actual test in a midsize sedan. If I hadn’t had to deal with the parallel parking (which I rarely have to do, but am now much better at), I would’ve passed first try.

Parallel parking is a necessary skill, so I believe that it should be part of the driver’s test. It’s a skill that you more than likely will use at least a handful of times while driving.

My mom’s had her licence for 29 years and she didn’t have to parallel park.

Agreed. Also, it sounds a bit harsh, but I think they give you a very generous space on the test. I can understand your case, being a new driver and switching to a different car, but in general I think its easy enough that if you can’t get it right, you shouldn’t be driving yet.

Yes, they do provide a generous amount of space. But, I didn’t have as much experience as I should’ve had. That was 6 years ago, and I’m a whole lot better than I used to be. My depth perception at the time was pretty awful, plus I let nerves get the better of me as well.

And no, not being harsh at all. I had trouble. I learned though, and I can do alright. (As long as I’m not in a big city during rush hour)

well snuze you can just practice it yourself now. I do the same when I am backing up my car and using my mirrors (contrasting those that stare at a camera to back up) :P
