While I technically did it yesterday, I feel 20-5 is the perfect day for an update on my ’88 205 GTi. I did a small fix. The shelf was shitty and had speakers. I wanted a clean one, but the (very rare) one I found didn’t fit due to a later model year hinge style. I tried to source the parts needed from a junkyard, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Then it came to me. The dealer! They had the parts I needed, in stock even, and after spending less than €10 I was out of the door.

It started out like this. Cracked and with speakers that weren’t hooked up.

Old hinge, with the axle mounted to the car:

New hinge, with the axle (not shown) mounted to the shelf:

End result:

It’s a big optical improvement, in my opinion. I’ll keep the old shelf and hinges, both the new and old sets will be with the car when I sell it. They’re in the trunk, for now. And no, the oil bottle doesn’t mean it leaks oil. I bought it together with the hinges, as a backup.

I also swapped an engine ‘mount’ on my 406 coupe this weekend, which is quite the achievement for someone with as little wrenching experience as myself. Sadly I forgot to document my progress. Engine ‘mount’, mounted on above/next to the engine. It didn’t hold the weight, it prevents the engine from moving when lifting off the gas. The old one had a broken rubber. Part 1, ‘anti-torque link’ in the picture.

One of the more horrifying things I’ve seen while mechanic-ing was a Pontiac van that made use of two anti-torque links much like that, with both of them coming loose. Not bolted back properly by the person who’d done a head gasket job.

You and me both. I really hate to let it go, but parking it outside and not driving it frequently isn’t what this car deserves. Once 505turbeaux and myself find a suitable second car the gti will go into a container headed for the US.

Have you found a buyer yet? If not, what are you looking to get for it and about how much does it cost to import it to the States. I can see if any of my U.S. rally friends would be interested.

The plan was to ship two cars to 505turbeaux, in one container. My 205 gti and a car of his choice. He’d find a seller for my 205 and I’d get the profit, I’d ship him the car of his choice at cost. I could choose to sell the 205 elsewhere though, and ship him my e30 Touring (or something else) instead. I’d like €5k for the gti, excluding shipping.

That sounds like a good arrangement, and 505’s an awesome guy, I don’t want to interfere :) Let him know though that if the two of you want I can post the car on facebook or something to possibly help you guys find a buyer for the GTI.
