From time to time, BMW decides to make a slightly hotted-up version of a non-M car, using some combination of factory and M Performance parts. These cars have been called different things over the years, and they’re a little bit special. The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I’m a little biased in liking these BMW accessories parts-bin specials, because I drive one: a 2013 135is, which BMW created by installing a bunch of their accessories on the regular 135i with the M-Sport package. Ditch the chrome window trim, reflash the ECU to give an extra 20 hp, add an extra oil cooler, and the BMW M Performance exhaust, mix in a couple 135is badges, and now you have a 135is.

Other cars where BMW has followed the same general idea include the E30 320is, E46 330i ZHP, E92 335is, F20 M135i, and F22 M235i. Their exact mix-n-matches of parts are all different, but they’re all hotted-up versions of regular cars. Well technically there are no “regular” versions of the M135i and M235i but whatever.

Anyway, the 435i ZHP takes your usual 435i and adds the following:

M Sport package

Front and rear aerodynamic kit

Shadowline window trim

Aluminum hexagon interior trim with black high-gloss accent

M Sport steering wheel

Sport seats

Track Handling package

18” Orbit Grey V-Spoke Wheels

M Sport Brakes with 4 piston front and 2 piston rear calipers

Adaptive M Suspension

Variable Sport Steering

M Performance limited-slip differential

Unlike full-M cars with their active LSDs, this is a purely mechanical clutch-type LSD

M Performance Engine Kit

M Performance air intake

ECU reflash

+35 hp and +32 lb/ft (automatic) or +17 lb/ft (manual)

M Performance exhaust

M Performance Aerodynamics Package

Carbon fiber front splitter & rear spoiler

Rear diffuser

Black kidney grilles

In a move that is sure to rustle the jimmies of “real M car” drivers, the 435i ZHP is riddled with ///M logos on each door sill, each side skirt, each brake caliper, the steering wheel, the engine cover, and the intake. Maybe the exhaust has one too but there aren’t any pictures of the exhaust. So that’s at least 11 ///M logos.

Overall I like the 435i ZHP. The LSD is the best part—my 135is and its open diff can easily light up one tire and set the traction control light blinking like crazy.

If you want one, get in line quickly, because BMW is only making 100 of them, and they’re all going to be painted white or black.

Or you could always order a regular 435i with all the same options, in any color you want. Because now through their VIA (Vehicle Distribution Center Installed Accessory) program, BMW will install accessories for you and include them in the MSRP of the car.

But then it won’t be a “real” ZHP.

They haven’t announced the price of the ZHP, but a base 435i is $46,250 and an M4 is $64,200.

A 435i with M Sport & Dynamic Handling packages, black grilles and M Sport brakes is $52,970.

My guess is the ZHP will slot in somewhere in that ballpark, and of course there’s all the other assorted options you might be able to get on it.
