Quick question for the tech savvy people (I used to be one, less so now). We are trying to save some cash by ditching cable. So far, so good. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. are doing the job. Comcast internet, and their all-in-one router and Wi-Fi aren’t. We get a random pause or the spinning buffering/loading icon way too often.
Would a new Netgear, Cisco, etc. Wi-Fi router help? We have a pretty large house, was curious if just broadcasting a better signal would solve, or at least help, the issue. We have their “blast” internet, which is supposedly faster than the basic version. So the question is, does that just suck and no Wi-Fi signal can fix it, or should we look into purchasing something new?

Get a separate modem and router. For the router get something with antennas that can be angled. Put the router as central to places Internet is needed as possible.
I have Comcast too with their combo router. It sucks. I got a new modem but still looking into routers trying to find a good one on sale.

It doesn’t sound like a router problem. It sounds like a Comcast problem.

Comcast is certainly a problem. They ran the fiber optic poles out this way for FIOS lines, but so far, no service is available. So I’m looking to make the best of the situation.

Yeah well I’d be happy with Comcast we have to use a 4g hotspot.

Or dial up.

Reference Point: I’m a FiOS customer and cut the cable TV cord also (just internet/phone). I have their base router (non-gigabit, non-5G), because I am thrifty and don’t want to buy their $100 gigabit router (Verizon requires that you use _their_ router). My wired hardware gets 50MB up & down. Wireless hardware is significantly slower (10-15 MB up & down) and experiences mediocre performance in general - even with strong signal.
If you can, I would hard-wire your hardware. Once I wired everything in the house, streaming is no issue. If hard-wiring is not an option, then you should find a bitchin’ router, but beware that not all hardware supports 5G.

If you’re getting a router, buy ASUS. They’ve been the best consumer routers I have ever owned. Bar none.

Good points. Big issue is stuff like the Amazon Fire Stick we use is Wi-Fi only so we’ll need to figure a way to get damn good signal to it. I can definitely hardware the iMac and have a drop available for laptops when heavy bandwidth is needed. Good call.

Good timing. Was just reading
engadget’s review of their favorite router
. Pretty cheap on
Amazon
too. That may be the direction we go.

That one has been known to have a glitchy chipset.
I upgraded from the cheaper one to the more expensive option and they’ve both been flawless for me. In years of combined usage the only time I ever had to reset the routers was to perform a firmware update. They’ve otherwise never had to be reset because of stability issues.

How long have you had the stick ? Could you return it ? Then you could replace it with a hard-wire-ready streaming box like Roku3 (which is smokin’ fast) or Amazon fire TV (non-stick).

Perfect. For like $30 more than the one I posted, the RT-N66U looks pretty good. Thanks!!

That one’s a good option. I bought that one for myself and for my mother. Neither one has given any issues.

Added to cart. Thanks again.

A while now, I got it via Prime when it was on pre-sale ($20) but it may be worth looking at a different option since we dropped cable and are going pretty much all internet-based TV.

Ideally a crazy fast new router, parked a foot away from the Fire Stick will do the trick though! TBD

Hope it works as well for you as it has for me.
Word of advice, go to Asus product page for the latest firmware. The auto-update firmware was a little buggy on the earlier firmware models, but it works fine on the latest ones. So just go to the asus support page for the firmware to make sure you’re downloading the latest.
After that, the update mechanism from within the webUI should work just fine.

Yep, was just reading that in the Amazon comments. Ideally it’ll ship with a better firmware than the ones people were commenting on, but I always like to upgrade anyway. Good intel.
