Quote from the ad: “I’ve been told that there were five Chargers in their fleet and all have received at least one new motor while in service and some as many as three .” Not the first time I’ve heard how hard these things sucked. Dodge really has had a quality control problem. They also like to throw rods.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was only left with one cruiser, after all of their POS Chargers except one had their engines blow up. The only one left had it’s engine blow up at 30,000 miles.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Massive quality control issue with these shitboxes. The solution? Buy Panthers.

Probably the reason why my local department bought about 15 of them, and sold every single one within a year and replaced them with guess whats?

That would explain why my local police department have all but phased out these for newer ones which I'm assuming are more reliable.

Apparently the newer ones are affected also, my local department got rid of them within a year and never bought Chargers again.

No wonder I’ve only seen Tauruses and Caprices as of late. I remember the Chargers were really popular, but then after a few years, I rarely see them anymore.

Funny. All the sheriff deputys I’ve spoken to swear by them. 90% of them are Chargers. Maybe it’s a climate thing. My police department is picking them up too. They held onto panthers exclusively until last year. I’ve honestly only heard good things about the Hemis. Pentastars too, solid little engine.

Are they Hemis or V6s?

It’s not a climate thing I don’t think, it’s just bad quality. Mainly in the previous gen cars though.

Both. 145840 miles and being sold. It’s not 200,000 like the Panthers but it’s no 30,000 like you claim. Also the one in your ad has 277,407 miles which is huge for any car, especially considering it was used hard. It’s the most similar police car on the market to the panther (RWD and V8).

This isn’t a widespread issue actually. It’s very very specific to 2005/2006 cars, and newer models (2007+) should be relatively problem free (or their problems just aren’t with the motor).

The issue is the steel valve seat set into the aluminum head, which will work itself loose over time from the difference in heat expansion. The 5.7s aren’t really known for throwing rods, I’ve never seen a stock motor blow like that or even heard of it.

Kinja'd!!!

This is my 5.7L out of my 2005 Magnum RT. Motor was a total writeoff at 147,572 miles and the head was also beyond repair.

You can get the 6.1L heads and they bolt on, you just need to change the pushrods and rocker arms in order to get proper valve clearance and they do not have the valve seat issue.

I ended up getting a completely new motor from a company that supplies Dodge/Chrysler dealers with warranty blocks. Timed, compression checked and shipped with a brand new gasket set for $2800. Stuffed that in and have been problem free as far as the motor is concerned.

So all of these people trying to say the Chargers are crap, no, the 2003-2006 5.7L HEMIs (RAM trucks from 2003-2005 included) all have a valve seat issue. It could lead to the rod getting thrown, but the valve seat is the real issue. Considering my Magnum is normally my DD, not a bad car, not even unreliable, but a manufacturer defect is a manufacturer defect. There are plenty of worse defects out there. I’m not trying to say the LX platform is the best thing ever, but it’s not some epic POS, not by a long shot. For $2k, I’d consider scooping up one of those, dropping in a new motor, and having a running/driving and pretty awesome car for under $7k.

The 3.6L Pentastar was also a pretty solid engine. If you want to try and blame a V6 for having too many problems, that’s the 2.7L V6. Those had oil pickup issues and would nuke the motor relatively quickly.

Does your magnum seem to go through ball joints and/or tie rods more frequently than other cars? The 2005-2010 batch of 300/Charger/Magnum have been plagued with that issue. My dad had a 300C and it ate through 4 sets of ball joints and 2 sets of tie rods in only 3 years.

My local police dept. uses Caprices and Explorers, and the other nearby agencies use Tauruses. No Chargers anywhere to be found, strangely.

It’s a Dodge thing. My Neon went through sway bar links as well (3 in 3 years, two needed to be replaced from wear, one broke off).

I have no idea whether the current bushings on my car are original, but I’m having stiffer bushings put into the car currently. Front, rear, diff, ball joints, etc. Should solve that problem completely. I’m not a fan of OEM parts when OEM parts are known for wearing out pretty quick. I’m also having KW v2 coilovers installed with the bushings.

The LX cars are very nose heavy, and nosedive pretty hard when you have to brake suddenly, puts a lot of strain on everything up in the front. Did your dad’s 300C have stock wheels, or aftermarket? A lot of the cars with aftermarket wheels went through tie rods pretty quick, I’m just doing them now for what may be the first time.

Yeah I know what you mean, I had new ball joints put on my truck in December and the driver side already needs to be replaced because the shop used the cheap ones. I’m just going to buy a beefier set and have someone like Midas put them on this time. I don’t really have a problem with using the OEM suspension parts on my truck because GM did make most of the components really tough.

As for the old 300C, it only had the 18” wheels that came on the C models but it was an AWD model so that could be what accelerated wear and tear on the suspension a little bit.

I’ll admit that I once had no problem with Midas, but I have had a couple bad experiences that have caused me to not go back. Not sure if it was just a rough day, I knew the guys in passing, and they mostly knew their stuff, but when you screw something obvious up, well, I didn’t like having to fix it.

I suggest stiff bushings, but not solid ones. As far as ball joints go, just make sure they have a zerk fitting and you’re fine. Get a proper alignment after it’s installed and you’re good to go. Skipping that alignment is what gets you into trouble in a short period of time.

I’ve only ever used Midas 3 times and it was only for getting tires swapped with new ones.

I usually just take it to the Chevy dealer since my uncle works there, I just tell them only he can work on it that way I know there is no corners being cut.

My area uses a heavy mix of everything. Caprice, Explorer, Crown Vic, Charger, Taurus, Dodge Polara (no, really, there is still a Dodge Polara police car here, but it’s used in parades and such), even Durangos are used here. Sometimes you’ll see the odd Suburban or Tahoe police vehicle as well.

V8 is an option. Previously I assumed the spec sheet was set in stone with the v6.

Kinja'd!!!

Although most of the ones I’ve seen are v6s. I’ll revise my original statement in that the Charger is the closest thing to the p71 in rwd, v8 and made in North America.

The issue was with the MDS in the HEMI. Because these cars sit idleing for so long they run into different issues than the rest of the customer fleet ever would.

It was 1977. My folks had been driving a ‘68 Firebird (350, 2BBL because the 4BBL led to problems with the rear tires) for 8 years. The car had 50K miles (that’s right: 6250/year) and -as far as my brother and I were aware - was running fine. BUT...Chrysler had released a new ad, featuring the suave, sophisticated Ricardo Montalban. Exhibit A:

Well, hell. That was just too much to handle for Mom. My poor father - who had been beaten down by 19 years of marriage by that point, is all I can figure - traded in the ‘bird for a new Cordoba. 360ci that put out something like 180HP. The car stalled on the test drive. Over the next 80,000 miles, it went through 3 vinyl tops and 4 transmissions. It was broken down more often than not, it seemed. The electronic ignition modules kept dying. The silver paint fell off. It left us stranded a handful of times. It was, in short, complete crap. And to this day, neither my brother nor I will ever consider a Chrysler vehicle. Which is sad, because I really really really like the Jeep Wrangler...

Dad, by the way, hated Ricardo Montalban until the day he died...
