I bought these old cans at an auction a few years ago, they’ve been sitting in my garage since. This week I decided to make something with them. A brief synopsis of the build below.
First I sanded down the rusty and dirty cans:
Then I sand blasted the cap and sprayed the cans with several coats of primer and paint and clear.
Then using a jig saw with a metal cutting blade, I cut a hole in the sides of the cans for the old 6x9 speakers to fit in. I had the speakers lying around from when I removed them from my Trans Am, all I had to do was patch a broken cone. I lined the inside of the cans with Dynamat to help dampen any weird sounds and to help reduce the “tinny-ness” that would potentially be created from the metal enclosure. Then drilled a hole in the back for the speaker wires to go through. And that is about it!
They actually sound really good! They have a lot more bass than I am use to, but overall they sound good (but not good enough to replace my Ohm CAM-42s). They look pretty good other than the patched cone, these would be perfect garage speakers. If you have any questions, ask them in the comment section.

That’s awesome. Now all you need is to find a Jeep to stick them on!

I meant that in a good way, actually. I think you want the cabinet to resonate a wee bit. But my name ain’t Bose, so I’m just guessing.

Sell them to Jeep people. They always have fuel cans mounted on the back
