I can’t figure this one out. KBB says in fair shape it is a $7k car, and it seems like it should be near that. But the guy is listing it for $4k.

This doesn’t sound like “fair” condition to me:

Convertible doesn’t work
Need new brake pads
No grills
gotta fix front bumper
Hood paint coming off
Need oil change

That’s poor condition. That probably explains it.

Looks like it's had an engine fire...

According to KBB description of fair it is close to fair. Minus the brake pads it is driveable.(according to the ad.) Most of that is cosmetic.

Hmmm... what signs would make you think that? The glazing and screwed up paint on hoods, roofs and trunk decks is common on vehicles here in Hawaii if they aren’t garaged. Especially, if the car is more than 7 years old. My friend’s 09 Altima had to be repainted because of the clear dying and ruining the paint. And that was 2 years ago.

It looks like from the shitty pictures that there was primer painted right along the hood just the length of the motor

According to the KBB Car Condition Quiz, just these problems do put it in the “fair” category . But there are a bunch of questions on this quiz that the ad doesn’t answer. It’s quite likely there are other issues with the car that would drive the condition down to a lower rating, that just aren’t mentioned in the ad.

Yeah, I’ve texted to ask. We’ll see what he comes back with.

Convertible doesn’t work

Just with this sentence just run away from it. If a cheap fixed roof BMW is expensive to repair then think twice about this heap.

After you say that I can see what you mean, but the picture is so crap, I can’t be certain. It could just be light. hmmm... do these cars go Ferrari? If I get to go look at it I will certainly look for signs of fire.

Ok, but actuators are $115 on ebay, and a roof is $500, and a computer is $150. What else is would need fixed to get it to work?

And if the air conditioning works does the top need to go down? :)

Seeing these prices makes me think it is possible to fix. Though in reality I figure the car probably needs to be disassembled completely to loosen that one last bolt.

If its been neglected that much I would say everything.

I’ll see what he comes back with regarding the rest of the car, and if I go take a look at it and like what I see, then I think I will have it inspected by a mechanic. I know the immediate walk away stuff, but more hidden stuff (body bushings, wheel bearings, etc) that need a lift, and could cost a bundle, not so much.

That assumes it had it’s 60k maintenance done... as you point out that’s an iffy proposition.

KBB is always inflated. I wish they’d shut the damn sight down. For whatever reason, people think it is a reputable source for pricing on their cars. False information is much worse than no information at all.

I think it’s a starting point, NADA is useful as well. Does that mean you think it’s overpriced at $4000?

NADA says as a rough trade-in that it would be worth $5K.
