I said the Corolla was a good car on the FP. Today should be “fun”.

Its not a bad car for getting from Point A to Point B reliably and cheap. Depends what you want out of a car. :)

I think it’s funny how the FP hive mind gets.

Is it a Toyota/Honda? It’s beige and sucks. Needs RWD and a billion HP and a gated manual.

Then they hop in their parents’ old accord and drive to high school while pretending they're driving a Ferrari.

It’s a car. You get what you pay for, it takes you reliably from A to B and shouldn’t be a pain on the wallet to run. If it doesn’t have a habit of exploding, I’d say it’s generally a good car.

Beigeness is one thing. Beigeness coupled with horrific dullness, weird ergo, and bloat is another. Is it perfectly serviceable? Yes. Does it annoy me? Also yes.

I thought they ditched the 4 speed auto in them (maybe the base model still has it?) for CVT or manual.

I agree on the drums. No modern car should have them. Still standard on a lot of cars in the compact and subcompact segment including the Focus.

In my esteemed opinion it is simply laying off the old corolla stereotypes. Even if I knew shopping for “basic transport” in that price range I would not recommend it these days. It’s pretty outdated.

Top down highway cruising with some good music? Hell yeah.

Kinja'd!!!1

you’re right, compared to a 1970’s econo-box the corolla is a good car, but have you actually driven one? The ergonomics are nit good, the seats are uncomfortable, the suspension is simultaneously harsh and has poor body control, the steering has no feel even by modern electric power steering standards, the brake pedal might as well just be stuck in a bucket if thick mud and it suffers from the same problem many older American cars did where the brake boost is very immediate and powerful, causing a light press to yeild powerful stopping, leading to over-cofidence in the car’s stopping ability, as pressing the pedal harder in an emergency yeilds little additional stopping power. The engine is buzzy and makes little power accept in the high RPM range, where it sounds unrefined, and although I have not driven a 2014 or newer with a auto, the old 4-speed was calibrated for smoothness, not shift speed and results were acceleration delay that bordered on dangerous. No, its not a “bad” car, but it one of the worst you can buy new in the US if you use anything besides resale value and perceived reliability to judge by.

You can have fun in anything you don’t give a rat’s ass about. The challenge is making something that you all-round like, and can still have fun in. Granted, this will vary person to person.

For my part, I could have fun in a corolla for the reason stated above. I could also have the same fun for the same reason in the Mirage, for half the price.

I think it comes down to the competition. In 2000 the civic and Corolla were the best in the game for their class. 15 years later, they're basically the same car and everyone else upped their game and some passed them.

They just parrot “beige appliance” over and over without really knowing what it means I think.

I’m guessing my critics for the most part have never driven a car or at least haven’t had enough experience with different cars to know what’s good or bad. It’s the same people who basically quote Clarkson on their critiques of cars that they’ve likely never seen in person and can almost guarantee they’ve never driven.

I’ve received basically no comments since I said “if you can’t have fun in a “boring” car, it’s your fault; not the car’s.” After I summarized what makes it a good car.

Yeah. When I was doing research for my current car I made a big spreadsheet comparing all the normal stuff like fuel economy, power, suspension set up, brakes, manual option, etc. then listed base MSRP and built the way I want it MSRP. I did nearly all current compacts and subcompacts.

The Corolla was lowest on HP and not the best in fuel economy. I'll be ok with a little slowness (0-60 rarely matters in real life) for more MPG but it just didn't add up.

No, I honestly think the 2000 Corolla is BETTER than the current one in every way except interior volume and electronic gadget availability. hell, I think my old 2000 was even QUIETER than the current one, but the thing that really irks me about the (2012+ especially) is the horrible interior ergonomics, awful driver sight lines and hackneyed suspension (bouncy and rough, but with no body control). A Hyundai Elantra smacks the Corolla in those “regular car” performance metrics so soundly It’s sad.

It’s not a super exciting car but can be fun if you're willing. It has fallen behind the competition in a lot of ways but just because it's not as good as the competition doesn't make it not good.

I had fun in mine at times. The whole slow car fast thing. Most of the time I drove pretty normal.

Good car for elderly, teens, people who want a car with minimal fuss, people who want a huge trunk in a little car.

For a long time if you wanted a dependable small car the choices were either civic or Corolla. Unfortunately, Honda and Toyota rested on their laurels and have failed to innovate like they used to. The competition has either caught up or passed them in the measurable categories people look at.
