Seriously though...I mowed the lawn from age 8 on up.

Me too. Allegedly at least. I also started with an electric mower and had to keep the cord from being mowed. It’s amazing I survived.

The juxtaposition between the story and the ticker bar is fantastic.

Also, I started mowing when I was a kid too - had one of those fancy ride-on lawnmowers.

Well, without context its hard to know exactly what they’re talking about. Quite possible they’re talking about the yearly tradition of rednecks running over their toddlers with lawn mowers. Lawn mower joyrides are the worst.

hell my parents made me mow the damn lawn from like 8 years old on. I fared better than my dad who whacked his toe with the blade once. That was a fun trip to the emergency room for them to drill a hole in his big toenail...

no, no it’s not amazing you survived. you simply exercised a few brain cells, worked on developing your motor control nerves and listened to the little survival instinct voice in the back of your head. People these days are so fucking domesticated and coddled they don’t even begin to understand how stupid and over protective they are being.

The most dangerous thing about mowing the lawn when I was a kid was the time my dad almost killed me when I ran the mower with no oil in it and it seized.

Parents bought me a tractor for my 7th birthday. 1967 Cub Cadet 124. No saftey equipment, no auto shut off when you get up off the seat, and I’m still alive (remarkably). I still cannot believe that I sold it when I was 12 to buy an iPod. AN IPOD.... I still kick myself over that. If any oppos have one for sale, let me know, I’m still looking for another.

After my first week of college, I went downstairs to do my laundry. There stood some bozo who had no idea how to do his own laundry. He was busy piling everything into one washer - whites, reds, bluejeans, etc. I was going to let him go until he asked me how much detergent to put in. Then I couldn’t help myself. Laundry 101 was in session.

The kind of people who write a headline like that are the kind who can't figure out that there's a difference between showing someone how to use something safely and simply giving them the lawnmower and saying "here, go nuts". Not to mention the fact that the earlier you learn something, the more likely it is to stick. Especially where parental advice is needed. My dad was always correcting something when I started doing the lawn—If I'd waited 'til the age these people seem to likely to reccomend I'd probably have written off his advice, because of course I know better. Write your own "happy ending" to that.

You should have let him learn the hard way. You tend to remember mistakes that cost you all you all your clothes. Related/not related: A couple I know from home each do their own laundry. This is because when they were first married Valerie did the laundry and her husband complained that she did a bad job.

Fast forward 30+ years....Bruce has been doing his own laundry ever since that day. LOL.

They should focus on weed whacking, which I also did, and loved.

I do all of my own laundry and my wife does all of hers. We swap out for the kids, although my daughter is old enough to learn the ropes and has started taking care of some of the easier loads. God forbid any of my wife’s gets mixed in with mine. I usually shrink it. My daughter learned that lesson last weekend when some of my wife’s laundry got mixed in with a load she was doing. She shrank it. :)

Fuck that. Mowing lawns is how I made money before I started working in the trayliner factory. It teaches you how to pay attention, gives you some exercise when I know that I would have just sat inside and played video games, and in general is fairly pleasant.
