So I finally got brakes for the 88 MR2 now its giving me more issues! So when it warms up the engine boggs and the car shuts down. Now the expansion tank cap broke so its not connected anymore. Do you think thats causing it Oppo? Heres a picture of the bay.

These cars are VERY sensitive to having air bubbles in the cooling system. Here are some links that may help you.

Definitely get a new overflow cap from Toyota or you will just get more air bubbles in the system.

Another thing worth looking at is the sensor near the thermostat housing. The symptoms sound pretty similar to when mine was going. Coincidentally, that is also where the bubbles tend to form.

I was having a similar issue with my 1986 MR2 (attached above). I found out someone swapped the 4A-GE ECU in the MR2, for a Corolla 4A-G ECU. It would get to operating temperature with no problems, then start to bog down under mild acceleration. After a few minutes it went away.

I never would of thought of that. Any way to check that real quick? Clean AW11 BTW!

Thanks! It was at the mechanic when he noticed the problem, and looked behind the trunk lining at the wall between engine and trunk. There was a mess of wires where someone, somehow, spliced 4A-GE wires into a 4A-G ECU. The engine is a replacement from Japan with-out the EGR system and somewhere along that process of replacement, the ECU’s got swapped.
