Now what do I do with them? They are too rusty on the inside to be good for holding gas. Also, I don’t want to hold gas with them... looking for something more outside the box.

I’ve been wondering about that too. I have a couple that I have been meaning to see if they were still viable. I suspect it doesn’t matter as long as you filter the particluates. the BAD news is that you will be ticketed for driving around with these full since they aren’t CARB complaint.

You can have the inside cleaned and coated. I imagine the places that restore gas tanks would do it.
Or put them on eBay. I’m sure some Jeep guy out there would want them.

I didn’t treat the insides. I don’t want to use these to hold gas. No, just paint, primer, and clear.

There are several coating products on the market. All are expensive.
For rust, good old hydrochloric acid (Muriatic acid when sold in dilute form) works quite well. Got aluminum? Phosphoric acid does a great job of cleaning it. Neither will remove things like sludge or other contaminants. You must clean them first.
You are probably better off selling them as authentic pieces for display. A person can still buy Jerry Cans if they want something to store gas.

Speakers and hidden amp? I was gonna make some to go camping with, with a couple of marine units instead (because rain) and leave them on the roof rack to plug in a phone or mp3 player for tunes around the fire.

Fun project. When I was in the Army, about 25 years ago, I worked in the motor pool and we had a large number of these cans, full of paint chips and water and other debris. We spent an afternoon smashing them with an M578 tracked recovery vehicle.
