Since my girl has moved to Raleigh (NC) I have been visiting more frequently while looking for a job in the area (since I just graduated). The girl she took over a lease for in her new house took the lawnmower with her so the yard was turning into a bit of a mess.

The Up - I picked up a LawnBoy 10227 Silver Series from my boss. It has a funny little side wheel and is a neat little mower.

Kinja'd!!!

It had been sitting under about a foot of pine straw behind his shed for at least 5 years. Knowing my boss it was because one day it stopped and he didn’t bother to even try to fix it. I replaced the pull string, string return spring, air filter, primer bulb, and spark plug; and replaced the safety handle with an on off switch all to the tune off around $30 and some stuff I had laying around my garage. The LawnBoy is a two-stroke push mower, something I have never heard of before but it runs like a champ and cuts quite well. It is also the loudest push mower I have ever heard.

The Down -

Kinja'd!!!

A couple years back I also got a John Deere brand trimmer from my boss, all it needed was a primer bulb and fuel filter and line. It is a cheaper model that was actually built by HomeLite. It had a edger attachment that my dad used all last summer. I decided to bring it along to assist in the yard work for my girlfriends house. Well now that I get it here I can’t get it to run to save my life. I have cleaned and attempted to adjust the carb. It will run for a second and then die if I give it throttle. It last’s a little longer if I leave it choked, but not much. So help me out Oppo? What the heck is going on with the thing. Being the hard-headed handyman that I am I really don’t want to pay someone to look at it.

Thanks in advance for the help!

How recently was it running?

I had a homelite that exhibited similar behavior. IIRC, there was a crack in the fuel line inside the gas tank. Perhaps it was right where the line runs into the tank? Anyway, I know a new fuel line fixed it. I know you said you already replaced it, but that was a year ago right?

Honestly, it kind of sounds like a clogged main jet. Try removing all the plastic/rubber parts from the carb and soaking it in carb cleaner overnight.

I was thinking this too. Carb dirty, old gas, even a clogged gas cap if it’s a vented system.

If you watch the video; in the background that is it running in “cold start” mode where it is choked and Im gonna go with wide open throttle. I was letting it run for a few minutes. That was maybe 2 weeks ago. Since then it hasn't run quite right.

It could also be a clogged fuel tank drogue. Or a clogged screen (a lot of the Walbro carbs have a screen in them). The most common cause of dying when you pull the trigger *is* insufficient fuel - exactly what kind is hard to diagnose long distance, but “take everything apart and clean it” is a good start.

I sprayed it out earlier. I may try taking it all the way off. I am still away from home and I stupidly forgot to put all of my tools back in my truck, I have some though so I should be able to take it off without much of an issue.

Where the heck have you been? It’s been ages since I remember you being around.

Raleigh is cool.

Sounds like a similar problem I had with my mower last year. I cleaned everything, sprayed copious amounts of carb cleaner in it, etc. It boiled down to a fuel flow issue, and it wasn’t until I replaced the bowl gasket and stuck a pin through the jet that it finally started running right. It sounds like you’re close. But it sounds to me like a fuel starvation issue.

I’ve been lurking around when I can. The past few semesters have been super busy, not to mention I got a girlfriend. Hard to believe I have been a part of oppo for at least 6 or 7 years now.

Yeah, I love Raleigh. I’m from the coast so I will miss the ocean, but Im looking forward to moving up here.

Sorry, I meant “running properly”. Check the in-tank fuel filter if it’s got one.

It gets hot. And cold. At one point we had 85 degree weather and a school canceling snowstorm in the same week.

I was just asking because it sounds like a problem I had with a neighbor's lawnmower a couple weeks ago. It would barely idle with full choke but die as soon as the choke was off. It turned-out to be a clog in the main jet which I didn't realize was the main jet until it was apart a second time. The jet was what I thought was the drain plug for the float bowl, it can be an easy mistake to make.

I am guessing that trimmer is gonna need some o rings or gaskets. wild guess.

My mom had that same pushmower. The sound reminds me of cutting the grass as a kid. If I remember right it had a turlte / rabbit throttle level that yours appears to be missing.

Yeah, mine is a little ghetto. It had a throttle cable that was messed up so I got rid of it
