I’m bored at work, so here’s a retrospective review of a Regular Car Review (RRoRCR). Today, I’m looking at the controversial “Fiero GT” review done by The Roman.
Okay, let’s get one thing out of the way - yes it breaks “form” compared to most of the RCRs before or after it. It was done by Roman in a style of a film noir type delivery and script. It was a little less blunt force comedy and more “Gather round the radio and tune in to the misadventures of Mr. Regular featuring The Roman!”. Really that’s what the whole review was - a gleaming throwback to the halcyon days of radio. Where the power of the spoken word crossed with the allure of the live performance and enabled by the frequencies and electricity to have the largest audiences ever imagined. Where heroes won and the bad guys lost but maybe you’d have to tune in next week to hear what would happen.
In this case? Mr Regular has gone missing. The Roman aims to find him. Through guts, grits, and dames, he finds out why Regular is missing - he went on the search for the American mid-engined sports car. And in another neo-noir twist, Mr Regular himself is on the case of who killed it. It is totally different from any other RCR setup, even ones such as the Porsche Cayman and it’s Hunter S Thompson style delivery.......And it WORKS!......Kinda.
Look, if you sat down to “watch” the episode, it isn’t spectacular. It’s good, but not quite “there”. However, treat it like a podcast. Listen to it in the background. The Roman is very skilled at sounds and delivery. And if he wrote all of this himself, or did some of the editing, he knows how to play to his own strengths. There are some witty jokes and a fair amount of references to the 20s/30s era detective radio shows and comics. It finds a nice groove and takes you on a nice little ride. It might not be your favorite but it deserves more praise than it gets. And maybe....just maybe they’ve slowly but surely change the RCR recipe closer to this.
Roman’s fiero gt review - The New Coke of RCR.
If you shoved the Fiero GT review aside because it wasn’t RCR’s usual blend of “TRACK DAY BRO!” quotes and visual humor/gags (Headlights go up! Headlights go down!) then give it a chance as a podcast. Enjoy it as a short story. Give it a second chance.
On a scale of 1981 oldsmobile diesel to NA miata, this episode is an early 90s SL300.

I hope The Roman does more stuff in the future.

I think he has written more lines in the more recent episodes. I feel like Regular does the easy one liners and deep literary analysis stuff. Like the second part of the SVX was all him. But the roman can tell a good story and his own style is becoming obvious.
