This is part of the underbody air deflector on a Mercedes S600. Those are NACA ducts (from the other side) whose only purpose are scooping up air/water/whatever from underneath the car and blowing it... on the motor mounts.

just brake ducts, no biggie. Over engineering would be if they were hydraulically actuated via onboard networking and somehow tied in with the seat ventilation as well lol :]

They don’t go to the brakes. They’re a foot inboard of the brakes and point directly at the motor mounts.

Are the motor mounts close to the exhaust and fluid filled? “Keep the motor mounts from boiling” would be a compellingly idiotic German sort of thing to do.

They could be. This car is so much more advanced than anything we’ve ever dealt with before all of us feel equally removed from our element.

Yea, for real. You want over engineered ducts, check out Acura. I benchmarked them a while ago so I forget which model, but they had a ridiculously large and overstructured injection molded plastic piece that bolted into the equally overcomplicated fascia closeout.

Not a good sign.

We spilled coolant and oil because we suck at aiming. No biggie.

they blow out prematurely even with those lol. Motor mounts are my top seller here for ALL Benz :] Usually under warranty. 2 years is way too little for motor mounts to go out

Sounds about right lol. I think my e36 had temp sensors in the brake ducts next to the fog lamps. It had wired going to 2 different sensors on the driver’s side vent. What people don’t get is that even with all this hubbub, the parts fail way too early and are never cheap.

are they active motor mounts? Some cars use active motor mounts with small motors in them. If they are, these might prevent overheating and extend their life. I work at a german supplier. This kind of thing is a common theme. Its real funny when their over thinking stuff creates very obvious problems.

I’ve just been looking at motor mounts (this thread inspired me), and it seems one of the best motor mounts for a rowdy engine that exists is a fluid filled one as used for a Cummins 4BT in a Grumman. The cost, new? <$12. No active nonsense, can handle diesel roughness and torque, doesn’t fail. ‘Merica.

But the most ideal place to put the motor mount is right there. And since we have to isolate everything, it needs a viscous fluid to absorb things.
Oh but here’s the exhaust. Better put a duct to cool it off...

How ‘bout that.

pretty sure they’re for the turbos, even if they’re pointed right at the engine mounts it’d be to get air in there for them more than anything.

Awesome. Honestly it does get stupidly hot under there. You open the hood and your face starts to HURT. The exhaust is pretty damn warm as well. You could keep a hobo’s extended family warm in the winter just from them standing around this damn car.

We did two oil flushes and an oil change, as well as bleeding the intercooler lines, refilling them, and topping off coolant. That’s a lot of fluid to be slinging around at 11 at night. We spilled some. Some of it made really cool noises when it hit the exhaust. No need to be condescending.

interesting, I stand corrected. though it still seems to be to protect them from the heat of the turbos

Not being condescending - just joking around. It’s difficult to relay tone over text without going “LOL ROFL RIGHT GUIS!?”

The car likely has the active engine mounts that come with “Magic Body Control.” What year is it?
