A Fox body Mustang was spotted at a recent Detroit Autocross event. Assuming the driver had become lost on his way to Milan Dragway, the driver was approached for comment. His response was as follows:
“I’d heard a legend passed around the dragstrip for years that the steering wheel was designed for something other than maneuvering around the staging lanes. A good, God fearing man who only owned V8’s told me of a mythical place called ‘Autocross’ where I could learn about the fabled ‘corner’.”
“I was very confused when I showed up, there appeared to be many vehicles that had six cylinders and even *gasp* four cylinders! I did not understand what these commuter cars were doing at a place of racing, but I’d heard legends of a place called ‘Yur-up’ where it was common for vehicles without V8’s to race. The complete absence of tire smoke was most unsettling, the place just didn’t smell right.”
The Mustang driver completed five runs, each time completely astonished that the run lasted longer than 12 seconds. His best time of 36.141 seconds landed him solidly mid-pack. When asked about this he responded by saying:
“How can anyone know who the winner is when I’m not actually racing against anyone? I’m told that 36 seconds is good for a Mustang, but it seems awful slow to me.”
The Fox body was approached for comment as well, but the Mustang driver informed us that it was seething with rage at having been made to race for longer than 12 seconds at a time.

The Fox is fine. That Challenger and Prius next to it though?

Surprisingly, the challenger wasn’t slow.

There’s a Fox that competes in my local auto x. suprisingly it’s pretty quick. Also he needs those fender flares because of how much body roll he has through tight corners. I’m pretty sure he lifts either front wheel when powering out of a corner.

To be honest my car would be pretty quick if I were a better driver. A bit more tire and a good driver and the car could win the class. The car is way, way too capable for a beginner like me!

Foxes are pretty versatile like that. They make drag cars most easily, but they’re not hard to turn into track beasts or even drift missiles.
I miss mine.

From yesterday. They’re like, cornering extra.

I’ve autocrossed my Prius. It was, umm, body roll-y

The idea of completely removing the fenders for tire clearance is brilliant. The weight loss is a bonus.

I think that’s the best thing about autocross....people race EVERYTHING.

That’s what fox bodies do on smooth pavement.

Yeah I regret not purchasing one before they all turned to rust and the remaining good cars started going up in price.

for comparison how did the challenger do?

I think he was a better driver than me, but I believe he was around a half second slower. Pretty comparable, not bad for an old fairmont!
