I argue that people in good taste own large homes or mansions because they need garage space for projects.

Which Opponaut WOULDN’T take a house like this?

The only times I have issue with mansions are McMansions that take up 80% of the lot and mansions that are only occupied 1-2weeks out of the year. Pointless.

Agreed. The mansion is only worth it if you use it to its potential, such as using all of the rooms. If you don’t then just get a normal house.

If I wanted a big house, I’d like a cosy living space and BIG garage. I often feel that conventional mansions are wasted, so many rooms are rarely used or are unoccupied.

I don’t get that either, people build huge houses on these little shitty lots. Their house ends up 6 feet from the house next door.

Why not buy a big lot and build a medium sized house instead of some huge house with no provacy.

A big house should be like the house above, it’s got just the right amount of rooms for things, and a 20-car garage.

I’m going to be blatantly honest here. I would love to have a massive mansion with tons of bedrooms just to fulfill my design desires that I would never do in my own room or in a small house. However that would be accompanied by a pole barn sized garage.

Occupied 1-2 weeks of the year means they’re paying your local government property taxes but not getting anything back. Surely better than an empty lot, no?

Unless you’re a NYC Gawker who thinks that if Mr. Oligarch hadn’t built that ritzy condo, you’d be given a cheap apartment on prime real estate 100 floors up.

I don’t know real estate tax code (specifically town by town) but, they avoid every other possible tax, I’d be surprised if they haven’t found a loophole for property taxes also.

I know that's the generic party line, but the truly wealthy ones aren't dodging a thing because the hassle of a tax evasion charge isn't worth it. They just pay up or go elsewhere.

People only whine about mansions that have dozens of bedrooms that don’t get used and pompous show rooms full of shit that’s too priceless to touch or use. That kind of stuff is just ostentatious.

Nobody complains about barns.

I prayed about this last week. It’s a house I saw with the structure made from pieces of Boston’s old elevated highway taken down during the Big Dig

What I least understand are how many giant homes get built with such few bedrooms vs useless rooms. My grandparents built a vacation place in the 50 and crammed it with bedrooms de people to come and visit. Now as that generation passes all the homes in the street are getting torn and turned into McMansions. What would be funny is when all the homes were being built in the offseason all the old time residents would walk around the construction. Weirdest would be giant homes, 2 bedrooms 4 baths and 3 living Rooms.
