I still find this a little hard to believe. But not out of the realm of possibility. My question, though, is how he managed to gain access to the unit in the seat without anybody noticing. If I saw my seatmate removing panels from the plane, I’d be all over that FA call button.

This is not possible. The entertainment system on an airliner is in no way, shape or form connected to any flight or navigation system. It is a stsnd alone server in the cabin.

Well the inflight entertainment systems typically have a navigation feed that allows the passengers to see position, course, speed, and altitude, and to see that plotted on a map with a trail of the route they have flown. But I would expect the designer of the system (and the certifying authority to allow for that matter) to use a one way ARINC 429 interface that would not feedback to the nav system. There would be no need for it so you wouldn’t design it that way; at least not in aviation. Thus I agree. It’ll get identified as a BS story eventually.

The fact the FBI is investigating the guy leads me to believe it's at least possible.
