***UPDATE, looks like the rumor mill became true this time, and fairly accurate with details.***
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Well it seems some info from some “close sources” (for what it’s worth) have divulged some details on Toyotas next sports car that would be placed below the Twins. It will pay homage to the Toyota Sports 800, a small RWD coupe.
Akio Toyoda told us a while back that there would be 3 RWD sports cars in Toyota’s line up and this would be the 2nd one. The source says it could be a competitor to the Miata, but if it is a coupe and not a convertible I’m not so sure about that statement.
It’d be powered by a NA 1.5L producing around 130hp, weighing in around 2100lbs, 2+2 coupe (albeit seats for children) and (the key points here) RWD at the price of a base Corolla. The article states it’ll cost around $20,000 AUD (austrailian) which roughly converts to $16-17k USD which is close to what a base Corolla starts at here in the states and 20k AUD is close to what a corolla costs in Austrailia.
Only time will tell, but if even some of these statements are true; if a 2100lb, RWD, super affordable coupe, comes to light it wouldn’t have any competition (miata base price is around 25k) and be very welcomed, we need more RWD options and I can’t think of any other RWD cars that have the price of a corolla.

Oh geez, I was just thinking about how I’d love to own a S800. Now I might actually be able to afford its successor in a few years. Here’s hoping it stays true to the S800’s light-n-fizzy attitude. If it does, we could see the first serious competitor to the Miata since the S2000 bowed out.... Hopefully it will look as pretty as the 800.

Styling wise they said it could have similar attributes to the cB 86 in Japan, at least the front end

Put the 5.7 in it already!

Sounds like the original goals for the FR-S.
Anyways, I can’t see a car bigger, lighter and cheaper than the ND Miata. considering that people whine about the lack of power on the FR-S I can’t imagine the butthurt about a car with less hp than the corolla.

I have a feeling that it’s gonna be a kei-sports car for Japan-only.

The source was from austrailia and they described the price in aud so if the Austrailian market gets it we’d likely get it as well. I would be disappointed if when Akio told the press there would be 3 sports cars in the line up it didn’t mean world wide (the FRS/86 btw is sold in many markets more so than other toyota name plates)

That’s great! Now make it 4 doors and the size of a Corolla instead...
Or really would some company, any company just fucking make a modern 510 already?! and really it needs to be the size of a Corolla/civic/what ever so I can push the seats back far enough so I can drive one.. and price it base the same as the Corolla/civic/what ever with top line spec’d ones going for 25K max and atleast 230hp, manual as well, but auto is fine so long as it’s not so trick it ups the cost too much... thank you..
ps: small trucks while your at it... or maybe just el camino the shit out of above said car, thanks..

I think the Butt hurt over the power in the FR-s was every one expected more. Having Subaru in on the deal and talk of a 2.0 flat four got every one in a tizzy esp since the rumor pipes at the same time had the next gen WRX pimping a turbo 2.0. Every one got excited and cross shopped their speculation for the FRS and WRZ to the point I think people expected a 250HP or so turbo flat for in the FRS/BRZ just like the WRZ. So then that when they dropped with a N/A 200hp engine every one was super let down and let that influence their opinions of the FRS/BRZ. Also paired with eco tires, and a some what lazily gears transmission it really could use a few more ponies but not enough IMO to ruin it.. but that’s just my opinion man..

I thought the GT86 /was/ a Miata fighter...?

Seriously, I was half joking but I would love a small RWD sedan. something more in tune with the original GT-86 or more so the 510. it can be cheap and slow at a base, so long as they give it an engine with potential for tuning and after market stuff..

motoring.com.au have a history of over hyping concepts and rumours. I don’t believe any of their stories that include “according to sources” until there’s a proper press release.
They really hyped up the 4-door and convertible 86’s, and every time someone at Mazda coughs they confirm the next RX-7

looks like it +1 definitely looks more production than concept too.

i think the reality of emissions/mpgs hurt the fr-s a bit. couldn’t have it rev to the moon and/or put shorter gears in it and screw the highway mileage.

yes, exactly. that too.
