Well, I went and looked at that V12 BMW I saw on CL and, lo and behold it was not such a deal even at $1500. It turns out it hasn’t been registered for three years which means there is almost $1000 in license fees, and the AC doesn’t work. It was also missing the BMW wheels that the ad had shown. Overall it looked fairly nice for a 27 year old car. It just wasn’t ready for driving.
On the plus side the guy was open to any offer. He just wanted it gone. I wish I had space for a project though as it did sound nice.

Funny how the seller could have just communicated this over the phone/email and stopped you from wasting your time. God knows what else he didn’t tell you about.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Also... a ‘cheap’ BMW can be the most expensive BMW...

You take the good with the bad. I bought a car where the seller tried to mention quickly in passing that it had been stolen last week... Having driven a recovered stolen vehicle for several years long ago, it was not a deal breaker on a beater.

That sucks, Missouri has a $5 late fee. No matter how long it sits, you get it to pass emissions & safety ( all cars have to anyway at $36). You still pay registration & $5 extra.

I would still consider it if I had space available for another longer term project. Our property manager would not be happy with that though.

It looked clean overall. The trunk was spotless. Honestly, the previous owner who just left it in the garage for five years was probably an enthusiast. I think when this guy got a hold of it that it was left out in project land for awhile.

I don’t feel my time was wasted. A nice ride on the motorcycle and I had the chance to look over a piece of German engineering.

The next owner has to pay back license fees? Where is that?

Hawaii. Where being military means you can license anything for cheap even if it hasn’t been paid in years, but if you are non-military buying something from a military guy who hasn’t paid the license, you get to pay the late fee, the license fee and a fee for converting it from military personnel owned to civilian.
