Hauling mode (it would be tied down on top)

Camping mode

*I know the most effective way to do this is not cab to tailgate, this is purely for demonstrative purposes.

I’d make this out of corrugated plastic sheets with permeant connections joined by woven wire/ riveted fabric and temporary ones with a zipper or buttons.

Fire away at why this is or isn’t stupid. I know I probably wont see huge fuel savings and that it will be imposible for my savings to equal the cost but I like a challenge of making a daily drive able 4x4.

Well, if that’s how you feel about it....

Sorry, that was directed towards air resistance.

My concern would be rigidity. Also, not sure how you’d fold it enough to fit on the roof.

I vote you just do aero cap and leave it that way. Like a race truck

I could just have it fold into the bed or just fold enough to get bike in.

Like a NASCAR style one that’s just a wall?

Hinge it like this. I thought I had a side view, but I guess not.

I could put struts on the roll bar. I was just going to get rid of it but it could give some rigidity.

First off, that is a really cool toy truck

Now, I like this idea in principle, but I think it will flap around like crazy, and it’s going to leak ... A lot.

Flaping and leaking will both be remedied with tape. I’m thinking a strong duct tape can go over all the connections, sealing them and retaining their bendability. I think I’m going to build a more permanent shell first then work on the usability thing. I’d really like to have the camper work.

As someone who uses duct tape to solve truck problems, it won’t last long.

You could do a round tube frame, shrink wrap the frame as a base skin, then skin it with diamond plate/thin sheet metal/heavy duty tarp. That might work.

Yeah duct tape will disintegrate after a couple years exposed to the elements.

The project looks cool and totes doable though. Some guys on ecomodder made aero campers that lifted up like hatchbacks, but didnt transform like your scheme.

Leaks really are going to be the thing to figure out. One possibility is to make the top slab and part of the sides from sheets of stiff plastic, but then use a waterproof fabric anywhere you can get aeay with it.

This is a totally different concept, but it may give you some ideas

I’m fairly sure the tape will dry up and crack before too long. But, if you decide to try it, let us know how it works :)

Oh I’m sure it will. This is all temporary until I can make a fiberglass one. This is more of a proof of concept to myself.

No I mean it will pull apart within weeks. That’s been my experience at least, using Gorilla Tape.
