Noise, dirtier undercarriage. MAYBE a funky rear O2.

You’d get pulled over for loud exhaust every other second. It’s a Ranger, it’s not going to sound that good. Probably very raspy and droney.

It might add 1 HP or 2, but ya Im worried about it sounding farty. But the beauty of this mod is I can always bolt it back on.

I just revised with more details. It’ll probably sound very raspy and there will be lots of cabin drone while cruising. But really, you can get stopped for loud exhaust. Especially if it sounds like a fart can.

I doubt I would get pulled over, Ive seen harley davidsons ride past signs that say noise ordinance enforced (Theyre not really enforced around here)

Plus I can always just bolt it back on. And Im not really removing any emmissions equipment, Id be leaving both cats, just shortening the exhaust pipe

Possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning which can be fatal . Bolded because I’m genuinely surprised that I’m the first one to bring it up. Even assuming that the cat is behind the cab, exhausts outlet behind or beside the bodywork for good reason.

Before I do anything, I think I’ll look around under there for o2 sensor placement. Plus if worse comes to worst, I can always bolt it back

I did that once to my catless V6 mustang in my garage. Sounded like shit. Now removing everything but the exhaust manifolds made it sound awesome. Also, you can see blue fire coming out of the exhaust manifold. You should give it a try on your garage, just for the giggles.

I’m not saying that an exhaust exiting underneath the body will definitely kill you as sure as a bullet to the brain would, but CO is odourless and colourless, and CO poisoning is very real and very deadly.

Good plan. I recall reading that, on my Taurus at least, if there is an exhaust leak, or unbolted exhaust, within 24 inches of the sensor, it will throw a code.

I know the second Cat ends just before the rear axle, so I’d probably be Okay, CO wise. But Thanks for the caution. If I do it, It likely wont stay like that for more than 24 hours, Id bolt it back in. I just wanna hear the 4.0 in a more raw form to see if its worth it to save up for a catback

I spent a lot of time thinking about mods for my truck and lurking on RPS for advice. I looked into an underdrive pulley, cat-back exhaust, even a turbo. When a Prius beat me from the light to the on-ramp, I realized that it’s just a truck and nothing short of a v-8 swap was going to make it fast.

So I bought a fast car instead.

The thing is my truck is decently fast for what it is. 4.0 V6 (160 HP, 225 lbft), 5 speed manual, 3.55 LSD. It’ll do 0-60 in 8 seconds (if the bed is empty).

Kinja'd!!! Opposite Locksmith > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s
05/16/2015 at 01:43

Kinja'd!!!0

That is fast, I mean it can get out of it's own way, but that's remarkably little power and torque for 4 liters

Kinja'd!!! TheRealBicycleBuck > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s
05/16/2015 at 01:48

Kinja'd!!!0

There really wasn’t much difference in horsepower between the 3.0 and 4.0. The 3.0 V6 was rated at 145hp, 165 lbft of torque. Mine is also a 5 speed (both trucks use the same manual transmission), but I don’t have a LSD.

I have to rev it fairly hard to get off the line quickly, but I always thought it felt zippy enough.

Then I bought a WRX. I jumped to 265 hp in a car that weighs about 900 lbs. less. It is fast and fun. When I hop back in the truck, it feels slow and sloppy. But that same sloppiness makes it much easier to drive on our poorly maintained roads. I don’t worry about avoiding the rough patches, I just drive over them in the truck.

Pushing a Ranger to go faster is just wasting money. I still love my truck, but I use it as a truck, not a fast car.

Ya, the 4.0 OHV is incredibly inefficient. But it only weighs 3025lbs empty (3075lbs with the shell and empty). Its no Ferrari, but for what it is its incredibly fast,

Kinja'd!!! Denver Is Stuck In The 90s > TheRealBicycleBuck
05/16/2015 at 01:55

Kinja'd!!!1

The difference is in the torque. I cant downshift into 2nd above 1k rpm without violently jerking the whole truck. And yes we both have an M50D, but the gear ratios are very different.

I know there are faster cars, but this truck is pretty remarkable. It can do 0-60 in 8 seconds, haul 2000lbs of cargo in the bed, seat 5 (with seatbelts) and tow 5000lbs from the frame. Thats pretty impressive.

And ya its a waste of money to make it faster, but who cares. Isnt that what being a car enthusiast is all about? Liking what you like and throwing all your sense out the window in the name of enjoying yourself

I had experience of this in my Alfa 156 V6. The two bolts clamping the exhaust to the cat rusted and detached, so it was essentially removed from the cat back.

Sounded like a fucking racecar. Genuinely like something that would be at home in a 1930s Grand Prix. Really rally good.

Very loud though. You certainly wouldn’t be able to get away with it permanently here in the UK.

That’s why I want a little y-piece with a butterfly on it. That way I can press a button in the interior that says ‘LOUD’ and have essentially a straight-pipe exhaust :)

Are you sure about 8s? That seems remarkably quick for the OHV engine. The official specs put it at 9.7s.

V6es in general, and Rangers in particular, don’t have sweet-sounding exhausts. The ball flange is near the rear of the cab, so when you unbolt it, ALL the noise booms back into the cab, and it only sounds good at idle. Kind of a blap blap blap with heavy bass undertones. Rev it up and it rises in pitch and volume, obnoxious and borderline painful. The drone at 2,000 rpm will make the whole cab reverberate. It’s in no way pleasant.

I’ve tried a few different mufflers on my 3.0 and the best I’ve found is the Dynomax VT. It’s got a flapper valve inside so it’s quiet at low speed, but opens up when you nail the throttle. Add a resonator (glasspack) somewhere behind it to deepen the tone.

You must have the bench seat. Mine has buckets in front. I used my truck for kid transportation which was fine for a while, but teenagers, heck anyone over about 8 yrs old just don’t fit well in the jump seats. I was getting pretty anxious about what would happen if we were rear-ended with one of the kids in the jump seat. Even with seatbelts, sitting sideways with no head restraints doesn’t paint a pretty picture if you are hit from behind. I put many miles on the truck with at least one passenger in a jump seat and I’m thankful nothing ever went wrong.

For me, investing a couple thousand into a supercharger or turbo setup to get the acceleration that I wanted just didn’t make sense. I could get a hell of a lot more performance with not much more money by buying a car. I did go whole-hog and bought something new, but I’ll be driving it for many more years to come.

What does make sense for me is outfitting the old truck with some paint, a cap like the one you have, and all the gear in the back to make it into a much better camping rig.

It'll not sound great until you get a glasspack "cherry bomb" or a flowmaster for like a 100$. Then go to a muffler shop and weld it on enough pipe to get it behind the cab and a turn down for good measure.
