Am I Crazy?

For some reason, last night I decided that a Volvo Diesel would go well in my rusty Capri. No idea where that idea came from.

Any and all knowledge about Volvo 5 and 6 pot ddiesels would be awesome. Also, note that I like turbos. Things like overall dimensions of the engine it’s self, power, information about the electronics and available transmissions, manual obviously. Parts availability and aftermarket support and any other little niggles these engines have.

But now I’m seriously wondering why it wouldn’t work.

I just put about $2000 into the Taurus that was supposed to be the donor car. xD

A Mercedes OM617 has a much larger aftermarket, and are a lot easier to find. Plus, the D24T in the Volvo’s are an Audi/VW engine. We had one, it died.

That’s 2 grand into the chassis of a $400 Craigslist special. Which by the way, I haven’t spent a dime on the engine.

Well there are many different Merc engines to choose from, but the OM617 was a 5 cylinder they made from the 80’s to the 90’s.

Then there is the OM606...

Yep it was a 1977 american market 2.8 XL. Was.

I got it for $100 of the side of the road two blocks from the junk yard. No engine transmission or interior. The inside was full of garbage and gallons of rust. Gallons.

The plans have gone from an SHO V6 and a ranger transmission, to a 9000 RPM 2 litre V6, and now this.

I’m not concerned about cutting it mostly because I had to cut it up to fix all the rust. I used an entire spool of welding wire building a new sub frame torquebox and subframe connector. On one side.

And my father has three other Capris. A 75 JPS, a 74 RS2600 factory race car and a 5 litre swapped MK III huffing N2O.

Earlier ones are mechanical, like the OM617. They made manual equipped ones, but they make adapter kits for different transmissions. Just do some forum searching.

Foxes are fair game for the LS stuff. Proper Capris deserve better. That SHO swap sounds like fun.

A Volvo B234F is a nice option. Get one before the Turbo Ford guys destroy all of the heads for Lima block swaps. Then abandon the project..

There’s a thought. They did put a very small number into Capris in the early eighties. Might a bit hard to find in Canada though.
