So Mazda and Toyota are now in a short marriage agreement. That’s great for everyone, but I’m curious, what’s does this mean for the FRS and the Miata ? Originally the two were designed to compete against each other in their niche market. The Miata for the open air purist, and the GT86 for that kid wanting to live out Initial D in the Walmart parking lot. We recently just got a Mazdayota as a Scion and I don’t think it’s going to stop there. I think this may be the best thing to happen to Scion since its creation. Heck what’s stopping the next GT86 and BRZ to share from the new MX5 ? Or if Subaru and Toyota their own way, what’s stopping the Sky active from being installed in the GT86 ? Great things are going to happen and it won’t stop at the Camry.

If the Subaru boxer is gone from the next FR-s then the FR-s is dead and there will be zero reason to shop Scion for me, as an FR-s owner.

A Mazdayota doesn’t entice you ? What if that was a Rotary :P

Unlikely

If there was a rotary, heck ya! But why would Mazda need Scion for that? I guess for Toyota’s money like how Subaru did.

Just don’t let them release another turd like the RX-8. Lets go RX-7 FD remake.

I highly doubt there will be an FR-S based on the ND. By the time it was re-engineered to a coupe the ND will be an old chassis. I guess if Toyota was commited to the idea of the FR-S they could drop a few million in Mazda’s account and tell them to build a coupe with some toyota badges. But considering that the FR-S was created to display toyota’s engineering prowess I’d be surprised if they lost face like that.

A four door Rotary coupe might be what a company like Mazda might new to help the Roatary survive. If they market it at the A7 or CLS as that weird alternative. The RX8 should have been a two door, honestly it looks like it was at one point then they added those stupid clam doors.

I don’t think that would make sense. The rotary is a horrible choice for anything but a sports car. Sports car owners are OK with sacrifices from a good performance engine, like seal issues, burning oil and poor gas mileage. In a sports sedan you have to be more conservative. If Scion wants a CLS competitor (Audis bore me, so leaving it out) they would be better off with the BMW straight 5 route and continuing that partnership.

Toyota owns a significant share of Fuji Heavy Industries and Subaru are growing at a shocking rate. The Subaru-Toyota tieups won’t stop, it just not be a RWD sports car.

I honestly don’t think it means a thing for those two. Now Yaris and mazda3’s yeah. The last thing they'll search for in this partnership is efficiencies in the enthusiast segment. Maybe last but not the first, second, or third.
