I tried polishing the paint at home with an orbital polisher to no avail and I don’t want to spend a fortune to buy a buffer then I still need to do it myself. I found a guy that will buff and wax the car for $120 bucks. I’m excited to get this thing shiny again.

I always watch these posts with interest, since a mid-70s barge-Lincoln is one of the things on my bucket list.

That paint is incredibly not-shiny. I look forward to seeing the result!

I’m glad you didn’t sell it :)

Just get one. They are not very expensive and a lot of fun to work on. I think I’m into mine for $2200 bucks so far including all the repairs, this saturdays polish job and the car itself.

An orbital will work. You probably just need a thicker cut polishing compound. The usual “paint restoring” ones at autozone won’t work. They’re not coarse enough. Some locals will have
something like this
, which works pretty well on really damaged paint, but you have to be careful because if you overdo it, you can sand through the paint with it. I don’t think that you’re going to get much more than a temporary shine at that price. It’s kind of alot of work to restore old faded paint since you have to do it one compound at a time starting heavy and then going to lighter cuts to get it to shine.

Does he charge a flat rate? After your car he might start charging by the foot.

There was an absolutely incredible one in blue that somebody had listed for like $4k back when I had absolutely no money instead of almost none. That’s when the lust kicked in. Dem opera windows.

I don’t think the cars has been waxed once in the last 36 years. It is SEVERELY oxidized but other than that it is all there. No flaking or anything like that. It is definitely salvageable.

$120 isn’t bad considering it will take 20 years and 50 gallons of car wax to get that awesome aircraft carrier supa shiny! lol. Get some good before and after shot buddy :]

Wow, that’s impressive. If the guy’s doing the whole car for $120 I think you’re getting quite a deal!
![]() 05/14/2015 at 11:58 |

Only $120? Does this guy know what he’s getting into? That’s like 27 square kilometers of sheet metal there.

It’s actually not that much to buff since the roof is all vinyl and below the trim line is rockguard. He only has to do from the beltline to the door trim. A honda civic would be more work if you included the roof.

So am I. Now that it’s finally getting somewhere I’m starting to love it more and more. I could really use an old pickup instead of this car tho. So I might sell it eventually.

The paint on those is single stage and will be extremely easy to rub through. Hopefully it goes ok.

The thing is if I did it by hand using the compound I had it worked fine but with the polisher it did not do a thing.

After it is all shiny you’ll be able to ask more for it then before.

Will do my man!

I’m surprised you know what a kilometer is,being american and all.

That’s the plan man! once it’s shiny I’m not asking anything under $3500 bucks. The interior in this this is freaking MINT. Now if I can get the outside to match we’ll be golden.

I’m surprised you don’t end all your posts in “eh?” being Canadian and all.

How’s the vinyl roof?

Tell me aboot it eh?

Perfect. I just need to wash it real good and maybe put some type of conditioner on it. But it’s not lifting anywhere,it’s not faded,it’s not ripped.

I actually interact with many Canadians since the company I work for started in Canada. I find they say, “Right?” a lot and are not looking for you to answer them.
![]() 05/14/2015 at 12:16 |

That’s because you were probably pressing harder by hand. Let the compound do the work. You don’t have to press it.
![]() 05/14/2015 at 12:17 |

That’s surprising to me considering the state of that paint.
![]() 05/14/2015 at 12:24 |

That actually sounds about right. I here “Right?” way more often than I here “Eh?”
I’ve only ever met 2 people that could not complete a sentence without saying Eh? at the end.

makes sense

If you get it back and find that the nu-finish shit washes off after a few days, give it another go with a heavy compound first, and then one or two finer polishes to make it shine. The paint’s definitely salvageable, but I think it’s going to need alot more work than the guy charging $150 will be willing to do at that price point. I’d start with the compound I linked to before, then
go to this one
to bring out some shine,
then this one
to finish it off and keep it waxed afterwards since there’s no clear coat.

My old neighbor growing up used to use these as pickup trucks. Went through four of them while I was growing up :)

Exactly how I felt after buying the CV. I still think a Ranger would have been a smarter purchase.

It’s going to probably need to be compounded, then polished, and then waxed. I would make sure that he doesn’t try and shortcut you with a wax job. $120 is really cheap and I would be skeptical that the detailer understands exactly how much work is involved.
Here’s some good reading for you:
