From the
Planes You’ve (Probably) Never Heard Of Department
of Planelopnik, we bring you the
Avro Canada C102 Jetliner.
You always remember your first, and one reason you may never have heard of the Avro Canada Jetliner is that it was the world’s second jet-powered transport plane, though it never entered production. Taking its first flight on August 10, 1949, the Jetliner was only 13 days behind the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and while most indications were that the Jetliner would be successful, Avro Canada decided to focus their efforts on production of their !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! interceptor. Considering the checkered history of the Comet, one wonders if Avro Canada ever regretted the decision. Even billionaire Howard Hughes, who wanted to buy 30 Jetliners and operate them on the east coast between New York and Florida, couldn’t convince Avro Canada to produce the plane, nor would they allow him to build it under license in the US. The second prototype, near completion, was scrapped, and the flying prototype was broken up in 1956, though the nose and cockpit were saved for display in the Canadian Aviation Museum. Despite a promising life cut short, the C102 did give the world one lasting legacy: the word jetliner . Much like Kleenex has become the generic word for facial tissue, jetliner , first coined by Avro Canada for the C102, has become the generic word for any large, jet-powered commercial transport.

Talked about Avro and no mention of the Arrow?!?!

I’m going to include the Arrow and the Jetliner as part of a series titled “Poor decisions made by the Canadian government and the Canadian aviation industry.” I think there will be ample material for such a series.

Or, if you’re Steve Miller, you have a congenital lyrics-writing defect which makes you write jet-air-liner because you can’t pick a single word.

Well, to be fair to Steve, he needed an extra syllable. It’s probably “jet airliner”.

We are, however, talking about the man who once rhymed Texas with “facts is” and “taxes”. Not quite the nadir reached by Foreigner in rhyming “mind” with “mind”, “you” with “rendezvous” AND “you know who”, and... well, any and all of the other rhymes in Hot Blooded, really. Both are on my guilty pleasures list and I’ll listen to them unabashedly, but MY WORD.

Is thebigbossyboss actually Steven Harper. It would make sense since you claim you are the boss and you are in Ottawa.

I just love the way early jet designs integrated the nacelles into the wings.

I do too. You can see how really nothing changed, they just put jet engines on prop planes. That a/c would have been just as good with radial engines.

Ah, Foreigner, the nadir in a record sleeve.
Gotta fever of a hundred and three. LOOK WHAT YOU HAVE STARTED!

I like turboprops. There’s just something elemental about a torquemeter.

Avro Arrow master race!
I have been confused by some people who think it should be remodeled as a generation 4.5 fighter. No, it’s an interceptor, its too large and made for completely different purposes that would be useless today.

They used round windows so they were already one step ahead of the Comet. I think the 707 would have crushed it though.

It would have, but I bet it could have had a pretty strong run for a few years if AC had taken the plunge. Thing is, I don’t think they had the production capacity to do both the C102 and the Canuck, and the Canuck was a safer bet. Sure is a pretty plane, though.

Toss some sweep on the next gen plane and it would have been really good looking.

You’re both wrong, it’s “Jedi-Liner.” He was talking about this bad boy. Steve Miller was a visionary, dammit!

Hey, thanks for the note. It’s been crazy busy with work. we launched our voluntary departure programs last week and my team had a big part of that. Kept me busy. I hope you and yours are well. I’m still loving the masks...well, as much as one can love a mask. Use them all the time.
Funny that you found an old post. I sometimes use old ones kind of as oppo DM system.
