So I’ve parlayed my degree and recent experience in to a job offer in Nashville, I’ll be moving there at the end of the month and starting sometime around then/beginning of June.
I’m currently apartment searching, I’m fairy limited rent-expense wise, but I was just curious if you guys had any advice/opinions! (good/bad areas, good eats, good bars, etc.) I’m 24, like to go out on the town wherever I’m at, love country music, and seem to have a fairly easy time when it comes to meeting people.
Also my next car may be a BRZ...

I live in Nashville. I have an apartment over in Hermitage—east of town past the airport. I’ve been here 4 years and have been looking for a different place to live.
What’s your apartment budget? I know a lot of areas and know what’s going to be in or out of your budget. Also, I can help you out with finding things to do.
Also, traffic here is a nightmare. Just FYI.

I don’t live the young life anymore but apparently east Nashville is very nice, so is Germantown (these are all new upscale gentrified as shit areas) if you are willing to commute the amount of what you get for your money expands tremendously. The cars and coffee in Franklin, is pretty freaking outstanding 1st Saturday of each month is exotics day, they have a good FB page. I work in Franklin, lived there for a year it was way way way expensive and I bought a house in Rockvale/murfreesboro and commute 20 miles to work every day. Nashville was built with no forethought regarding traffic and it can be horrific trying to get around because all the surface streets are riddled with the cancerous tumors that are streetlights. Expect to need at least an hour for travel no matter where you are trying to go.

Eh, I’d say 30 minutes to get anywhere if it’s not peak rush hour.
Which, evening rush hour starts earlier and earlier in the day as the week goes on, but always ends at 6:00-6:30 somehow.
And if affordable is what he wants, he missed the boat on Germantown.

I have unfortunately experienced the Nashville traffic more than the average transplant. I have lots of family on one side that resides in Murfreesboro and Franklin. I honestly am willing to pay to not have to deal with commuting. It’s a big thing for me, as well as being able to just take a taxi home at night. The construction that is going on in and around downtown right now is brutal also. I’m just not ready to spend more than 30-40 mins in my Jeep each day. I’ve dealt with Chicago and Atlanta traffic my entire life and I’m not trying to deal with a monster anywhere close to that magnitude again. Thanks for the input!

Yeah, we should.
I tried to make it to C&C down in cool springs last year, but this year I just haven’t had the drive to. Soooo early. I kinda want to start going on the other 3 weekends and hang out with the PCA guys and the other die hards.
The exotics and the Mustang burnout bros aren’t what I want my saturday morning to center around.

I just replied to another comment about the traffic... I unfortunately know it’s going to be brutal... which is why I’m going to try and save for a down payment on that BRZ asap. I know I wrote a fairly popular article about how I love my A/C’less/INSANELY loud Jeep, but it’s just not going to work for my situation right now. and 750/mo will be TOPS. Yeah, I’m going to be city-poor. What do you think of this? http://www.apartments.com/whispering-oak…

Whatever my situation turns out to be, really happy to hear that the car culture is going strong!

Just FYI, that link I posted for the apartment would also be ~10 mile commute to the office, going from southeast to northwest side of the city.

Okay. Your 750/mo is going to have to go pretty far. Because you’re looking at the sketchier parts of town away from city center at that money. I started at 671 in my apartment in Hermitage back in 2010, and I’m up to 805 now. Because rent here is getting stupid.
Real estate is dumb right now.
But those apartments look okay I guess. That’s a sketchier part of town, so you’re probably going to have some strange neighbors. Google reviews say they have had a bug problem in the past.
This wouldn’t be on my list if I were looking at that area of town. But at that rent budget, I guess some sacrifices have to be made.

This is more my style (read: location)
http://www.apartments.com/capitol-towers… 1.5 miles off Broadway, any idea what the neighborhood may be like?
Thanks again for all the insight and help guys, I always figure it’s better to get info first hand.

Where are you working? Because I can tell you if there’s a way I never want to travel in the morning, it’s SE to NW. I-24 is absolutely hellish.
I’d look for somewhere different.

Right, and I totally am aware of the fact that I’m not going to be living in some precious studio right on broadway with a great view. I’m 24 with an entry level income... such is life! But again, thanks for all the help. What do you think of that Gay Street location I posted?

That’s right in downtown, so the neighborhood is fine. Great even.
Buuuut, the apartment might be an issue. Google says there’s a huge problem with getting your car towed there.
Also, google review says it doesn’t have central heat and air. You willing to make that sacrifice when it hits 20 for a week in December, and 95 for 2 months in the summer with just a wall unit?
Oh, and there’s a train constantly going by across the street.
I think you may need to budget more for rent and get into a better place.

There’s always some flexibility, I hate that I have to just give you guys an arbitrary number at this point in time, as I’m going to try and negotiate $ a bit. But like I said, I really, truly appreciate all the help! When I moved from Chicago to Atlanta I came with my family, and when I went to South Georgia for college I went with 20 other of my best friends that I went to high school with so things were always made (fairly) easy. This is my first time jumping ship to a completely new city on my own and I couldn’t be more excited for it, but as stubborn as I am, I’ve realized this is a situation in which I will actually need some assistance. So thanks again, especially for being blunt and honest.

I wouldn’t live there if it was free.
Check these places out.

True. My wife has been rearing to go all by ear but new house requires so much time into getting everything right and on Saturday morning we couldn’t be bothered and would rather have leisurely mornings

Awesome, I like both of those! I just got back from Nashville yesterday so I’ve honestly only spent a few hours looking for places to live, mostly on generic places like apartments.com, so specific locations are a massive help!

I mean, now that I read the reviews on those, I wouldn’t go to them either.
Honestly, look around Hermitage. It’s kinda far out, but it’s not crime-y like Antioch is. Basically, you want to stay away from the 4:00 to 5:00 position on the Nashville clock. Also, 11:00 to 1:00 is probably a no go as well. Lots more crime and gang activity in those slices. So that’s North Nashville and Antioch out.
But you’re not going to find good prices on good apartments downtown. To get a good apartment at a good price, you need to be farther outside of town, like me. And expect to drive 30 minutes into work.
Where are you working, anyway?

Understood. Honestly it may just be me needing to pony up the money to live where I seemingly want to be at. And the office is essentially one minute off 65N, just off Rosa Parks.
