Third or fourth depending on how you look at it. Car was bought in Stockton CA, stayed there for ~25 yrs, taken to VA by original owner’s daughter and sold to the brother of the guy on CL who sold me the car (not the owner). At least that’s how the story goes.

Right now it’s not very photogenic. It’s got mismatched fenders, no hood, no interior, a wealth of dents and rust. Lots and lots of rust. At least the rust isn’t structural. At least all of the sheetmetal is bolted on and complete now. It even has both bumpers! I’ll see if I can get a suitable potato shot the next time I go up to work on it. I hate only having a one car garage.

Listen. I love it. I love driving it. It's a twenty-year-old truck but for some reason I just love it. The 4-wheel-drive works great. I'm interested to see how it does this coming winter if we get more atrocious snows like we did last year.

You know, this is an interesting question for me!

So on Saturday at my local C&C, I’m detailing my SL (because it was really dirty and I had zero time for the rest of the weekend to spruce it up), and as I was finishing up, I was approached by several people, and we talked quite a bit, when another fellow walked up. He kind of gave me “that look” where you know they don’t like you, but they’re trying to be polite about it. After some of the other people walked away a bit, he walks up to me, and points at the SL, and he says to me, “this car looks really familiar.” It has 100k miles on it, and I’m not shy about driving it around, so I’m just thinking he’s seen me on the road many times. There’s a local SL500 that’s also black, so maybe he’s confusing it with that one? I wasn’t sure, so I confirmed that it’s a local car, and I bought it from my previous employer who lived in the next town over. Well, after he mumbled a few things to someone he seemed to know well, he looks at me, points to the insulation under the hood, and tells me again that the car looks really familiar. Then after staring at me a little more, he asks me how many miles are on it, and if I knew how the previous owner had gotten the car.

Well, I knew that much of the story, so I was officially much more curious. He then proceeds to tell me that he lost the car in a divorce (which is how my previous employer got it). Then after a little friendly conversation he tells me that he was the second owner of the car, and that he liked it so much that after he lost it he did get another (but I’m not sure if it was an SL600 or not). The person he had spoken to at first had stayed a little later, and we spoke a little because many people are curious about how someone my age managed to get a car of it’s nature, and then in passing he tells me that how the previous owner lost the car was a shame, and just a low point/bad situation all around, because he’s a good guy and didn’t deserve that.

I’ve seen him at plenty of shows before, so I’m surprised he never approached me sooner, but he did seem very judgmental, and displeased, but I can only hope he realizes the car is in good hands. So as it turns out, I’m the 4th owner, not the 3rd like I originally thought.

Last picture I took of it (right before a show) before I parked it away for a couple years while I got my degree. Not too bad for being all-original (when I got it, did some engine/suspension work) and daily driven. Hopefully this summer the restoration can begin...

I’ll be sure to make a post about it if he can ever make up his damn mind. Basically he’s looking at any cool-looking 2+2s that have a manual and are at least somewhat reliable. So, his searches range anywhere from a 7th Gen Celica to a Z31 300ZX. I happened to find him a decent looking 924S, and he seemed to like it, so its now on his list of considerations.

I was the first and only owner of my first Golf. The second Golf was CPO so I would suspect I’m #2. It’s interesting that Jalops generally trumpet the used car market but there are a lot of 1-2 owner vehicles here.
