Just one little cavil about the Eisenhower/Interstates story. No doubt he was well-acquainted with Hitler’s Autobahns, and he understood their military potential completely, but according to his biography the initial idea came not from WW2 but WW1, when as a low-ranking officer he was ordered to lead a truck convoy from the East Coast to the West Coast. This took weeks; there was no route over paved roads from coast to coast.
