I went to 4 garages asking if they had any DOT3 I could buy. It was only at the fourth where they bothered to mention that DOT4 would be absolutely fine.
I have sympathy.

Brake fluid is a type of oil, so they weren't completely wrong, only semantically wrong.

Whats more weird is that apparently using “nicknames” for parts was some dumb fad in the 1940’s so you really can’t talk to too many older people and say “exhaust” because they won’t know what your talking about until you say their magical “nickname” for the part.
