Are the most difficult things ever. A car before the rant.

Kinja'd!!!

So some of you may know I’m a Petroleum Engineering major from the University of Tulsa. I also live in California. Where I’m pretty sure if I went outside and said I was a Petroleum Engineer, they would throw fruit at me. Fruit that they could barely afford because of the drought which apparently is caused by fracking. WOOP. That along with how Mechanical Engineers are a lot more versatile and even oil companies are hiring them over PEs, I don’t expect anything next semester either.

So I’ve decided instead to apply for things that I like doing. I just sent in my resume and cover letter to the Petersen for a position that is about Archives and Collections. They’re looking for a History major, but it’s a volunteering internship, so I hope I’ll get it.

If I have a summer internship that’s just me working around a car collection like this, I will literally die.

An interesting tangential pursuit to petroleum engineering. Taking it all the way to the end user!

I attended the University of Alaska, if you are looking for an interesting and major related internship that could help you in your future, I think I would look up there. If nothing else, it will yield in some interesting stories.

Fairbanks was actually my second choice for college. I planned to look up there but I was worried being surrounded by snow and trucks would get old quickly and my helicopter parents would never let Alaska happen.

Exactly why I majored in Mechanical as opposed to a less broad discipline.

The thing with AK is, you go there with purpose, not to hang out. Some people like it, but it’s not the most hospitable place I’ve ever been. Four years was enough.

You looking at Co-ops as well? Why not look for positions closer to Tulsa? Just asking.

So for petroleum lets look at your choices. A refinery, fracking/well development in the middle of nowhere. General drilling and exploration are they still doing that? Slumberger? Dick Cheney’s company Halliburton? Just some suggestions. I am a Civil and worked on a state survey crew for the summer building highways. So try Caltrans or local city/county agencies that do transportation. Peterson would be awesome but it’s nice getting paid.

I thought you were doing a major in Gender Studies with a minor in Philosophy!!!

Feel free to tell me to mind my own business, but what year are you finishing, and why not look for relevant (and likely paid!) internships away from home/helicopter parents?

I ask because as cool as the Petersen is, if you’re having a hard time getting an internship now, getting a job without relevant experience is going to be even harder.

I actually have no idea what Co-Ops are. I’ve looked for things around Tulsa up to the week right before school ended. I decided that if I couldn’t get anything, I’d come back home and then continue looking.

I applied for Petersen, but I also applied for a couple Mechanical Engineering internships in California. I know I need experience, but compared to last year, only 60% of the companies at the 2013 Job Fair came back for the 2014 one and two of my friends got internships from that job fair and then got let go before the internship started because the oil prices dipped earlier this year.

Co-ops are students who work multiple semesters with a company. They usually work on a one semester at work, one at school rotation. At our company we have them work 3 semesters. While it ends up extending graduation by a year, they end up with much more experience. You are probably too late for this summer, but it is another key word you can search for. It is a pretty common practice for engineering students and you may want to talk to your school councillors when you get back to school. To give you an example, our engineering org hires 50 coops per semester, but we don't do internships.
