It’s funny/frustrating. *more after the jump*

So my friend and I have to go into the school computer lab to research things for our history projects. The school computers are 12 year old eMacs. So I’m working on my research and find out my friend is frustrated. I ask, “what’s wrong?” He said, “I can’t copy and paste.” I tell him, “you ever used a Mac?” He says, “no, I use Windows.”

Then it strikes me that Windows uses CTRL + (key) to do many things. Mac uses + (key) to do stuff. So I tell him to use + C. It works. Then he does the same for paste. Then thanks to outdated eMacs and Google docs, the picture pasted doesn’t work, leading him to tell me that Macs are stupid and that I’m stupid for using one for personal use.

EDIT : he also tried backspacing using the return key and looked at me strangely when I told him it was the delete key to backspace.

Ugh. I sure people who bash something unfairly. If he used a modern Mac his opinion might be different.

True. I said to him that I used a newer Macbook Air and that it was much better, and he said something among these lines:

you’re stupid for using a Mac

you’re stupid for paying for it

Make him feel better by telling him some random dude named lonestranger on Oppo agrees with him.

I’m actually getting a MacBook Pro 13” tomorrow. I’m switching over from windows. I have used Mac before, and for everyday functions Macs function smoother. Plus I already have an iPhone 6 and iPad mini 3 so it makes sense. As for the price, you’re paying for the overall experience. Sure Macs can’t do gaming as well as a PC, but it makes up for it in design, everyday functionality and the integration with iOS devices.

My school gives everyone MacBook Airs to use, but I use windows at home. So I’m sorta well trained on both OSs. Both have their advantages, I'd say. I really want a new MacBook Pro in the same color as my IPhone 6 though.

The early Macs seemed like they were different just for the sake of it. New ones are a lot better.

Windows definitely has better versatility in that there’s a wide variety of programs, is cheaper, and often can be upgraded. I prefer using a Mac because it’s easier and I don’t appreciate the classic “Windows is installing updates” prompts. But I see why Windows is more preferred.

As for getting a Mac in the same color as your 6, the new Macbook comes in all colors of an iPhone. But its specs suck. And so does its keyboard. And its screen size.

I dunno, I played with a new one at Best Buy recently and really liked everything about it. The screen and built quality are eons better than my current Dell I have.

It’s definitely the best notebook if you intend to simply do web-browsing, a bit of flash gaming, and typing documents or making presentations. For anything else, you need a Macbook Pro or high-powered Windows laptop.

I’ve never been a fan of the 6+! I even think my normal 6 is just a bit too big. The 5 was the perfect size in my opinion. They should make an iPhone mini with the same screen size as the 5/5s. I originally was looking at the Air. I really liked the form factor, but I wasn’t a fan of the silver screen bezel and the resolution of the screen. I had an iPad Air before my iPad mini 3. The smaller size doesn't make that much of a difference.

Some say there might be a 4” iPhone 6c…some say there won’t. But if there is, go and get your small screen back. Personally I didn’t like the 6+ at all when I saw it, but I got it simply for the specs, and have grown to love the large screen. It helps a ton with reading.

The Air is ok for web-browsing. Using something like iPhoto causes it to go haywire and give you the spinning beach ball of death, and I hate that.

I think if I had to use a 6+ I could learn to accept it. The camera is the main benefit of the 6+, correct?

That’s what over heard. Great for browsing, but nothing to serious.

Do you like the new MacBook?

The camera is fantastic. Optical image stabilization is amazing if you have shaky hands. Also, the screen is higher resolution (more pixels per inch).

The new Macbook is ok. It’s a bit small for my liking and the minimal key travel when typing is disconcerting.

Yeah, I agree. Plus, only one USB c port. Not that practical. It should I rove in future generations, but I'm afraid the one USB c port will remain.

Delete is not backspace. Backspace goes backward, and Delete goes forward. eMacs was a terrible outdated program when I used it 8 years ago, with non-intuitive “short”cuts for everything. I could deal with different shortcuts on an Apple, but not the lack of right-clicking.

You touched on my only real complaint for Mac. They are great for day to day stuff and work, but they’re not the most solid on the games available front. There is Steam (that I’ve never used) so I’m not sure how it works.

It’s not nearly as frustrating as trying to instruct someone who insists they MUST USE A MAC at work but has no idea how to do basic stuff like connect to a file server. Here’s a tip, if you don’t know what you’re doing, let the IT dept give you a machine that is already set up to do all that stuff for you.

The MacBook Pro, before they started gluing them together, is the finest example of a laptop every made. I bought a brand new one with a Core i7 proc and upgraded it to 16 gigs of RAM and a Crucial SSD. I even ran Windows on it.

Traded it for a DSLR camera body.

This gave me a flashback to when I was was in the school newspaper in the early 1990s.

We had this idiot control-freak girl in charge and she insisted that it get typed up using Wordstar which could only be used on the one and only ancient Commodore 64 the school had... And she didn’t want to learn WordPerfect or use a PC (of which the school had several).

Hell... Using FirstWord+ on an Atari ST I had at home would have been better.

The net result was that she ended up doing most of the work.

But I have to say... Apple’s fascination with one-button mice is stupid. And aside from Macs, I’ve used a variety of systems like the Atari ST, Amiga, PCs (with a variety of OSes), AS400s, DEC Alphas with VMS and others.

You find that people can be very finicky at times. It becomes annoying.

I find that using an Apple mouse is just pure annoying because you can’t do anything. Using an Apple trackpad, now that’s a different story. A trackpad is so much easier to use than a mouse if you program it right.

Kinja'd!!! Manwich - now Keto-Friendly > MLGCarGuy
05/13/2015 at 00:14

Kinja'd!!!1

I’d say it was more of ‘set in her ways’ and wanting control than actual finickiness.

I can get by with the one-button mouse... and it doesn’t take me long to get acclimated. But it’s still stupid.

Kinja'd!!! Enginerrrrrrrrr > MLGCarGuy

To be fair, it is silly that apple doesn’t have a delete button (you know what I mean, something that removes what’s to the right of the cursor). Or how a mouse for apple doesn’t have a right click. Oh I should just hold the command button and click instead?

It’s mainly just a bunch of little things that add up. Overall they’re similar, but it’s little things like that get annoying. I would say the apple trackpad is actually quite awesome, but you can get that on windows now...so...also windows 8 has a quick startup time which was one of apple’s benefits as well.

I’ve never been an apple fan, but I can admit that Jobs knew how to direct his company to continue to make new and interesting products that have changed the market. With what apple has released recently, they seem like they have fallen behind. It’s kinda sad, the success of apple forced windows to up its game for the better, but now...I’m sorry but windows is starting to crush it again.

Step up your game apple!

That’s fair, especially with current trends. I just miss the old days when they’d actually release something novel. Making it thinner is cool and all, but now you lose functionality...

Heck the mac pro was released and I didn’t hear anything about it. It’s like they forgot to advertise their new funky design. Sure it looks like a trash can, but at least it’s different. Apple has lost that flair...
