IT is overrated.

Can you give us your reason why you’re considering it?

Because I’ve always wanted to serve, but couldn’t manage a full time commitment.

I’m more familiar with active duty guys but know a few guardsmen and reservists. All are good dudes who like the duty/life balance. Be aware that there are sacrifices (some jobs will look down on guard duty hindering advancements, and of course being called into service). For them it seems a great choice.

Any particular reason you wouldn’t want to go active duty? You can always go guard or reserve once your tour is up if you decide not to stay on.

Thanks for the advice!

The only reason that I’m hesitant to go active duty is that I’m planning on going back to school and would rather not have a relatively full time commitment.

I was in the Air National Guard for 9 years back in the Desert Storm days. I never deployed to the Gulf during the war, but did get to see and do some cool stuff.

Just don’t think you can’t end up in harm’s way. You can end up pretty much anywhere the active duty folks go.

Currently active duty but know plenty of guys who went reserve after their stint was done. I’ll have to agree with some here that it can keep you from advancing up in the workplace but that really depends on what field and what company. Glad to see you're considering it!

My dad was a recruiter from some 20+ years for the Va guard. I considered it to the point of walking into a recruiters office a few times, but I will tell you the same thing my dad told me. It’s a commitment, once you’re in it’s all or nothing at that point. I wanted to use it to keep my free healthcare and to pay for school, but in order to get my degree I would be in the service for ten odd years before I could go out and do what I wanted. to me not worth it. I would still consider it, heck, if I was drafted in I would proudly serve, but not now.

Good luck

Dude...GI Bill. I know tons of people who put themselves through school without loans on the GI Bill. There’s also lots of other education programs if you’re a hot runner and decide to stay in.
