Most of the time seats are blocked off at the rear of the plane to allow reseating of families that want to seat together. The gate agent usually takes care of this before the flight. He was probably charged for a preferred seat (I'm not arguing charging more for a aisle/exit seat is right). Just the way it is. But if you don't fly a lot you wouldn't know. Sucks.

Why is it that we so rarely hear stories about good customer service?

The entire story annoys me, not least, Mr. Strong. $88 is a pretty nominal fee and he could have avoided any surprises by telephoning the airline after he’d made the reservation. I fly but very rarely — and always enjoy it when I do — but caveat emptor , particularly when flying with a small child.
At the same time
, the airlines have turned into the ultimate bunch of money-grubbing poop-heads and their bean counters ought to all be flogged and made to ride in coach.

Why didn’t he just ask another passenger to switch with him? We got tix rather late for our last flight (it was a funeral), and while the agents were usually able to put us at least close together (I passed on the last row of the MD-90, though we could have had it to ourselves) other passengers offered their seats without our even asking.
Yes, airlines are getting to be money grubbers. What really chafes me is the way Delta charges you $25 to check a bag, encouraging you to carry-on instead, but there’s not enough overhead space for everybody. So, once you get to the gate, they offer to check your carry-on—for free. I suppose that once you’ve committed to carry-on, the bag stays free. But it sends a pretty crappy message to the schmucks who paid downstairs. Rather than charge $25/bag (or more), why not just raise the ticket price $5 for everybody? Nobody would notice, and Delta would probably make more money in the long run.
