And this may be my stupidest idea yet.
I really want a VW Touareg V10 TDI
I am actually seriously considering getting one (probably from 2004-2005). That engine is just so appealing to me as I love effortless performance.

The effort in this case will not come from the engine, but from your wallet.

So do I.

the v10 touareg is a monster i hear. One of those perfect batshit-crazy VW ideas that pops out every now and then.

I do have access to a decent workshop at hugely reduced rates, so that would help. I also have access to very good quality diesel.

Having sold about half a dozen of these when I was still working for a VW store; Buy it, buy it, buy it!
Also, invest in an oil refinery and your own VW service center with TDI and Touareg specialist techs, so that you can keep it running.
It’s incredibly fun to pull up to a stoplight next to a Ford SuperDuty or something of its kind, and see them stare at you, wondering why your truck is drowning out their diesel clatter. Then kill TCS and do a four-wheel burnout.

These are dangerously cheap. Around 13k is crazy.

Based on what I was reading up, people who actually own/owned them absolutely swear by them, while most of the nay-saying is coming from people who never actually had one.

They’re pretty much the cheapest Touaregs you can get around here. I guess people are too terrified to buy them.

DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!!!!!

Ehhhh... so so.
You’re still talking about a mid-size SUV that’s going to give you mileage in the mid/low-teens, and that has an absolutely enormous and complex engine (adding two cylinders, two turbos, 800CCs and a the only aluminum block in a diesel I know of) shoved into a bay designed around the Audi 4.2 V8.
It’s also one of the first two years of T-reg production, so it’s plagued by every electrical weirdness you can think of. (For example: Always lock the doors, even if it’s in a garage. If not, the electrical system stays fully energized and can completely drain/destroy the battery in <12 hours) Much of that will be resolved, but problems will happen.
Believe me, I’m not telling you not to! People love them because they are amazing to drive, and 553 lb-ft is ridiculously fun in a vehicle that size, but there’s definitely an element of Stockholm syndrome, especially after 10 years with them. You know it’s going to break, and it’s going to cost you money, you just don’t care, because it’s such a joy to drive. Kind of the early/mid 2000s VW story, really.

Have you heard much about the air suspension in those? In a car as heavy as this you’d think there’d be some complaints about the reliability of the pneumatic system, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. Other than that the 3 things I’m the most scared of are: the twin turbochargers, the crazy gear-based timing/accessory drive system, and the gearbox (especially if the car’s been doing a lot of towing).

I am amazed someone on Oppo is actually considering one. I am not going to say they will be reliable, but maintain it properly and use the forums.
The only time I’ve seen one was in Vegas towing a MASSIVE boat. The thing was as fast as our 2011 Jetta.

You do too.

The air suspension has been pretty solid across the board. I’m not sure how that happened, given VWs quality control at the time, but I’ll take it. The trans is definitely towards its upper limits, but as long as you’re not being an asshole with it, you shouldn’t really need to worry much. I haven’t even really heard of that many problems with the accessory system; I’m sure it costs infinity when things break, but they don’t seem to break much.

Cheers for the help, I’m feeling kinda reassured. :]

BMW, Mercedes, and Audi all have aluminium block turbo diesels. In fact the diesel from the M550d, which is a 3.0L tri-turbo making 381hp and 550 lbs-ft is an aluminium block.

I was thinking about a G wagen as a tow car but now I think I want this if it’s so cheap, and it’s got a V10 TDI!!!
