the most Kerbal real-life-thing I’ve found in my random perusing of Wikipedia. It is a system called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for emergency de-orbit of a single astronaut. i.e. what Sandra Bullock would have used in Gravity rather than all that mucking around in Russian and Chinese space capsules. Spoilers, sorry.
The concept, somewhat ironically, ties in another movie starring Sandra Bullock, Demolition Man in the way that it functions. Apparently, the astronaut leaves the vehicle in a space suit, climbs inside a plastic bag, fills the bag with foam (a la Demolition Man), fires a retro rocket to de-orbit, reenters, and parachutes to the ground. I guess that’s better than dying in space but sounds suspiciously like something I’ve tried in Kerbal Space Program:

If you actually had to use this and survived, I’m pretty sure you’d win ballsiest man alive.
“So what’d you do this weekend?”
“Oh, I just fell out of space.”
