So if the sources prove true, Toyota could be so impressed with Mazda’s engine expertise with their SkyActiv lineup, that both companies might be looking at expanding their technological sharing beyond just the Mazda2 platform and into drivetrains. Specifically Toyota’s hybrid and Fuel Cell tech and Mazda’s Gasoline and Diesel engines.
The two Japanese automakers already have a technology and production tie-up, and Toyota was now considering providing fuel-cell and plug-in-hybrid technology to Mazda, said the two sources, who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Mazda, in return, was considering offering its partner fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel engine technology under its proprietary SkyActiv series, the sources said.

Personally I think that’s pretty impressive for an automaker as small as Mazda. This is after all, the same Toyota that shared its engine DI expertise with Subaru so they could build the new and excellent 2.0L flat-four.

Toyota own a significant portion of FHI, so with Subaru it wasn’t really to benefit Subaru. Personally, I think that Toyota kind of hampered the FA20 and that it could have been better had the Subaru engineers not had to work around Toyota’s stupid demands (it must be a square engine with 86mm bore and stroke because it needs moar 86, and the DI integration isn’t that good). The DI integration is one of the key reasons for the torque dip in that motor. It’s still not a bad motor, I just think that it could have been better, especially after owning the 4AGE that they were trying to catch the spirit of. This is coming from someone who owns one. We’ll see what happens with the Mazda tieup, but personally I find the current Mazda offerings to be more interesting than any post-2zz Toyota engine.

Considering the lifetime average for my 3 is 35.6 mpg at 25k miles in and I drive in a fairly spirited manner, I bet they could make a great hybrid.
We’ll see what's around when I'm car shopping in 6-7 years.

Here's to hoping a Toyota partnership leads to enough money for Mazda to Mazdaspeed all their cars: Miata, 2, 3, & 6.
