I just got word of a couple of minor tweaks the SCCA is making to the format of their !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! events.

Basically, the Intermediate and Advanced run groups will still have a brief driver’s meeting, even if you chose the Fast Pass option to skip the main one. They wanted to get some face time, and make sure everyone knows who they should talk to for what.

The other big change is for the Advanced group - anywhere is your passing zone, not just the specially marked areas. Point-bys are still required, but the Advanced drivers are expected to have the experience to make such passes safely. That’s pretty cool.

What are the pre-reqs for running with the advanced group?

The Advanced Group has a higher pace and required a higher level of awareness than Intermediate. If you know the track, your car, yourself, and you want to feel the limits of each, advanced group is your group. Advanced group is allowed to pass anywhere on the track, with a point.

There are no specific requirements, like “a minimum of 10 track days” or anything like that. They’re relying on people to choose their own group according to their own experience and ability level. You are asked to list your experience as well, and a new driver trying to run in Advanced ought to be at least questioned.

I signed up for Intermediate last time. I’ve done a bunch of stuff, including track days, but hadn’t been on a track in 12 years, and never with my BRZ. I ended up in a combined Intermediate/Advanced group, and I could tell who belonged in which. The Advanced drivers were more aggressive, but still followed the rules and waited for point-bys. Because of that I’d end up with a 911, Evo, or Talon race car on my bumper for half a lap before I could let them pass. And I’d still get caught behind “faster” cars that wouldn’t give me the pass.

Because of this change, I’ve switched to Advanced for the next event. I won’t be a moving roadblock, and everyone out there with me should have a clue and play nicely - even if I want to pass one of them.

I’m glad they vet people a little, at least. I’d consider myself upper intermediate and have run with an advanced group before - most importantly it just takes good track awareness. I’ve never been in a pass-anywhere group before, but as long as you’re still giving point-bys, it probably not that much different.

I imagine not. I'll try it next month, then write about it and let you know!
