Last night, on my way to the store, I saw an SUV pulled over in a post office parking lot (this happens a lot at this particular post office; its just a convenient place to pull over). He had four different police cruisers parked in the lot with him. I thought this was a little excessive, considering it looked like a single person being questioned outside this vehicle, but considering that we have so much overlap between policing agencies here in Austin, I wasn’t too surprised.

About a hour later, on my way home, in the same lot, i now see the SUV being loaded onto a flatbed, and NINE cruisers in the parking lot! They were all black-and-white, mixed Panthers and Explorers, so I’m assuming they were likely Wilco sheriffs and/or APD. What would warrant that kind of turnout?

somebody was a bad bad boy, or it was a slow night. I have had a record of 3 pull me over once in a ghetto ass area

I don’t see it happen too often here, but back in California, it wasn’t unheard of to see three cruisers lined up for a simple traffic ticket.

What did the suspect look like?

White and still standing on both legs.

Seriously though, a white guy, probably about 30. It was dark, kinda hard to tell, except that they had a flashlight right in his face (possibly checking his pupils?)

Yesterday on my drive home from SAE Baja I saw 3 cruisers and 5 vans marked “Police Special Forensics Unit” along I-495 right before the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (Maryland side). There are a car there with all the doors and trunk open, and they were wheeling what appeared to be a stretcher with a body bag on it into one of the vans.

I’m guessing it was drug-related. Can’t imagine nine cruisers for a DUI.

was riding around in a car used by a friends brother after he died. And yes, the brother was a known drug dealer. We were driving his fleet around the block to see how they all ran so his mom could put them up for sale. This was a 65 Mustang convertible with Daytons. They pulled us out, and made us lay in the grass with a shotgun to the back of our heads while they searched the car. And then left us there to put the interior back together (mats, paperwork - they just left everything on the sidewalk and bounced)

Doesn’t surprise me. I was having a few beers outside a pub a couple of years ago. A small fight broke out between two guys and I thought let them get it over with but after a few minutes it was getting annoying with no sign of stopping so rather than phone the police and have them come out as and when they saw fit. I phoned the CCTV operator who could have eyes on the scene and he’d radio the police directly with the operator giving them a commentary of what’s happening till they arrive.

I’m not kidding you seven vehicles pulled up.

It was ridiculous. It must of been a really slow day.

funny in retrospect. I mean I am a white boy with glasses who was dressed a bit preppy with my boy who was not any of those things. Terrifying while it was going down though

SAE Baja is a collegiate racing series where college teams build and race little buggies. It’s a spec motor program, all of them are powered by the same Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine. So the focus is on chassis and suspension design, and power transmission (teams are free to run centrifugal clutches, sequential gearboxes, CVTs, hell, even hydraulic motors have been attempted). Competitions last several days with different events each day that teams are judged in. Static events include developing and presenting a cost analysis (how much it would cost to manufacture these in a larger scale), a business plan to market and sell them, and a design judging where students have to justify their design to industry professionals.

Dynamic events vary from year to year, but involve things like acceleration testing, maneuverability (AutoX on dirt), suspension capability (AutoX on dirt with obstacles), rock crawling (slow speed with big obstacles), and tractor pulling. On the last day of the competition all schools compete in a 4 hour long endurance race. This video is from this year’s 1.5 mile long endurance course at Budd’s Creek Moto Park, where Auburn flipped their car over a jump. Enjoy!

My guess is the driver in question had an outstanding warrant for something. And they impounded the car because he was in custody. That’s just a theory though.
