I’ve read the jalopnik article on this but the answer isn’t satisfying. I’ve seen these things on owner’s cars and frankly they scare the crap out of me. Ever year I usually see one or two of these things at the local air & wheels expo in Teterboro. Are they meant to be scarecrows for children? Or are they just really creepy dolls that turn into Chucky the killer doll?

Old people have a weird sense of humor. Evidence: Milton Berle.

to add: they have a weird sense of humor but don’t know when it’s become over-played, and it caught on and became a really dumb trend.
Seriously, people still win shows with these things present. How?

So, so creepy. Uncanny valley, but with children. Why do this?

“The dolls let wives of the collectors take part in their husbands’ hobby.”
That makes some degree of sense. I guess.

I think they were something for the wives of the baby-boomer collectors to do. You only see them on boomers’ cars/trucks.
Themed displays can also score you higher points in some shows, which is probably the only reason they made their way into the car shows.
This will pass.

Maybe they are to lure children? Wouldn’t free candy work better?
Creepy indeed!

A ‘79 econoline van with FREE CANDY written on it works better than this.

I feel like if you approach them something like this will happen...
