Because my new landlady can’t figure out how to cash a money order through Western Union, despite that being the way she asked my to pay the application fee... I sent in my app two weeks ago and left for New Hampshire last week, with the understanding that I could move in when I got back. Nope.
So instead of couch surfing I’m sleeping in the back of my truck outside my shop, cause that’s just better.
And to start my life off as a semi-hobo, I caught dinner in the river on the other side of the tracks and got myself a 40 of Miller High Life (woulda preferred Steel Reserve, but gotta go to the state liquor store then...)

Think about all the cash you’ll save! I spent a summer roofing and sleeping in the park...saved a ton of cash that summer.

On the bright side, your 4Runner kicks ass.

Most places that sell WU money orders won’t cash them. As long as you filled it out correctly she can cash it at a bank.
I would know, I’m a WU agent.

As a WU agent, what %age of your daily business would you guess is shady on one end or the other? I ask because the ONLY WU transactions that anyone ever asks me to be involved in are complete and utter scams. Certainly there are legitimate users of WU services?

That’s stupid that they won’t cash them. Any reason for that?

She wouldn’t take a MO from Walmart or the post office? Because then she could cash it at the respective place.
Anyway, she should let you move in because you paid. You could probably complain to the state housing authority.
I hope you at least kept your copy of the money order.

There’s a Western Union in every grocery store here, so that’s what I thought would be most convenient. It wasn’t the actual rent money, but the application fee she hasn’t done yet. Told me it’ll be ready in the next couple days, but I can’t move in until she does a background and credit check

No clue. I don’t make the policies, I just follow them.
Probably has something to do with trying to prevent money laundering.

Follow-up question: do you ever get confused people wondering why you can’t send a telegram for them?

That, sir, is badass. I thought about it, but being homeless while in school could be a pain in the ass

There are, but I live in an area with a lot of working immigrants (some illegal) so most of the transfers I conduct are people sending money back home to their families.
As a department head I have tools to report suspicious transactions to the proper authorities, who will conduct their own investigations into people that we report.
You can also pay bills for most major things through WU, such as credit cards and insurance. Those are always legit.

Yeah, it wasn’t much fun. But I was 23 and had nothing else to do :)

You should ask

What are you up to here in NH?

Helping my brother in law build a greenhouse and clean up their sugar bush. And just visiting my sisters who both work farms in New England.
Also, I dunno where you live in NH, but if the roads are as shitty there as they are outside Lancaster, I feel sorry for you, man.

If it is good enough and doable enough for this guy, I have faith in you.

I live in the Seacoast area, but my girlfriend is from Whitefield, and yes, the roads up there suck. The farm wouldn’t happen to be the Forbes Farm, would it?
