A few months ago I was gifted a GoPro Hero3+ Silver and I’ve been itching to use it for a while. I finally broke it out yesterday and filmed myself on a spirited drive in our JCW Mini Cooper S. Video quality was actually better than expected... Audio quality was not. As anyone who’s used a GoPro before probably knows, wind noise is a problem. You could hear supercharger whine at low speeds, but it is quickly drowned out by wind hiss. Not exactly a trade off I like.
Anyways, does anyone have suggestions on a decent cheap mic? I know I have to get the adapter and skeleton case already so I’d like to keep cost down as much as possible. Ideally I’d like to run a small mic into the engine bay to pick up on as much whine as possible. And suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Believe it or not, try this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00…
It’s designed to be clipped to your shirt when you are talking on camera but there’s no reason you couldn’t use it for other applications. And it has a clip and a little windscreen. I use it for all kinds of uses and it is great. Plus, 20 feet of cord.

Not a GoPro but I cut down wind issues with my Contour HD on my motorbike by taping a bit of foam over the mic hole.
The tissue paper below was to stop it rattling on the fluid reservoir, but annoyingly it blew away!

Use a separate mic, either inside the car, or against the back if you’re trying to capture exhaust noise.

That is very clever. I award you with the Oppositelock’s Macgyver of the Day award and will also try taping a bit of foam over the mic!

I have a contour+ and the microphones on contours are absolute shit, they are crappy even not moving, the camera is good though, but why they put a 2.5 mm jack instead of a 3.5 mm jack totally baffles me, no one makes microphones with a 2.5 mm jack without an adaptor, and yet 3.5 mm microphones are relatively common.

Mine doesn’t even have the jack at all, just a wired in mic with woeful wind noise. Apparently the easiest fix is to tape foam padding over the hole like I did, and the best quality fix is to open the case and solder in a better mic or add a 3.5mm aux port.

Put tape over it? I think that works
