I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen one of these for sale on CL. I might be the only one, but I have an INSANE desire to resto-mod one of these. I’ve read some Opel GT message boards, and a few people have swapped in the 3.8 Turbo out of a GN. When they hooked up, several people reported Sub-3 second (!!!) 0-60 times. That’s downright insane. Anyways, here’s the one I found.

$2200? That could be the deal of th..

Shit.

I read the ad all the way through.

$950 would be a good offer.

I truly like the looks of the Opel GT. It’s up there with the P1800 as one of my favorite weirdo designs.

I’ve heard of Ford 2.3 turbo engines being swapped in these. I’d like to see a 20v Toyota with open ITBs myself. Very neat looking little cars.

Yeah, the price is a bit high. Still cool regardless. If I had the money and space for a project car, I’d love to snatch this up for around $1k.

Both of those would definitely be interesting in this. Tons more power, but still lightweight, so it wouldn’t affect the handling characteristics too much. Another interesting option would be to swap in a Ecotec.

At a grand it’s a worthy project.

These cars usually languish in a half finished state for years because the owner thinks their Mini Corvette is worth big dollars.

Next stop? Junkyard..

Definitely the sad truth. That’s why I was so surprised to find this one. Most of the ones in existence are a) Showpieces that are unaffordable or b) rusted into the ground. Its hard to find one like this that’s a decent canvas; find a driver-quality one would be even harder.

Mazda MZR turbo perhaps? Or a ported 13b? An S2000 swap?

A used Miata drivetrain can’t be very expensive these days... Maybe a junkyard turbo kit tossed on that...

Ill stop now.

This one is in limbo at $2200. If they’re flexible it could be saved. It’s not really desirable outside of a niche though.

Ooooooh, a 13B would be completely righteous.

Believe it or not, I remember someone on Oppo swapping an NA Miata motor/trans into an Opel GT. Wish I could remember his tag.

There is a pretty good supply of parts, a guy has a business online out of eastern CA. Restomoding is a sin, making a Conrero race clone is not! I almost got one but my 240Z hatch area is so useful, dogs ect. that I had to go with the Datsun. The aluminum Rover/Buick V8s can go in these, they have done it in Europe. Its an American/German/French car, looks designed in France, engineered in Germany and owned by GM.

Hacking up a good Grand National to harvest the turbo 3.8?

Naw. Just, nawww.

Personally, I’ve always really, really wanted to put the drivetrain out of a wrecked Solstice GXP in one of these. Hell, the Opel GT is so light, I think the naturally aspirated Ecotec four could be enough. And if I ever get the money, you can bet I’m finding out.

Oh HELL NO. I was thinking of buying a separate engine and trans from an auction or something. I like the Opel GT, but not nearly enough to hurt a GN.

I fully agree. I think I mentioned to someone in the comments that an Ecotec would be a killer choice for it.

It’s the only choice. For me, anyway. I noticed someone floated the idea of using a Ford motor in this. That’s just sacrilege. Like all those dudes who put LS1s in Hot Rod Fords and old AMCs.

Easily goes for $5-$10k in the Europe these days. Fix it, export to EU, profit.
