It’s owned by a chap on my Triumph forum and runs a TR6 engine rebored to 2.7l and running EFi. The chap said it’s about 190bhp but I bet there’s a ton of torque in the mid-range, and 190bhp is more than enough for a car of this size. I’m having a rally hard time persuading myself not to blatantly rip off his front airdam design...

That is a handsome airdam.

I wonder what transmission/diff mods there are for this. My dad had period Triumph products in their natural era and he said the drivetrain was of “questionable” quality and they would destroy themselves on stock power much like a 3000GT VR4 is known for.

He went through several british cars like this. His friend bought a 240Z and kept it without issues for quite a while, after that my dad swore off british cars and has been a jap fan ever since lol.

I would like a triumph GT6 myself but he always talks me down.

The gearboxes are fairly stout on the TR6s, but the GT6s used the smaller 3-rail gearboxes like the Spitfires which don’t stand up well to power increases from the 6-cylinder.

A popular swap over here is the Ford Type 9 from a Sierra which can handle quite a bit more power. Certainly more than a 2.0l will ever produce. I’ve also heard of people putting Toyota W58s into TR6s and they can take a ton of power.

Diff-wise it’s a common swap to put a Subaru/Nissan R160 into the small-chassis Triumphs like Spitfires and GT6s. I’ve actually got one of those in my garage that I’m going to put in a Saab B202 Turbo-powered GT6 that I’ve got an idea for.

However, for my Spit6 project (I’m swapping the fuel injected 2.5l TR6 engine into my little Spitfire) I’m putting a Quaife LSD centre into the standard diff which should be able to handle my 180bhp/200lb-ft fine. The guy whose car I’ve posted pics of has broken a couple of ring gears on his Quaifed diff but he’s running a 3.27 rear whereas mine’s a 3.89. He’s never heard of the higher ratios breaking under high power, only the 3.27s. Oh, and he is running a bit more power and torque than I am. Something like 190bhp/220lb-ft.

Engines are fine, they just need to be built properly. These were cheap cars from the factory, and the build quality of a number of them reflected that. Start hopping them up without rebuilding decades old parts with questionable heritage and they’ll break :S

Around here you can get a GT6 for really good price, it’s interesting to see ht mods to “fix” it are cheap common items as well. I will consider one.
