I would have photoshopped something, but my photoshop trial I was using expired. So I used GIMP (dear god GIMP sucks ass)

Paint.Net is pretty good as far as things go.

Last time I used it it wasn’t near sophisticated enough for composite photos like this

Er... yes it does. For accomplishing the same task in either software Photoshop is 100x better than GIMP. This is an accepted fact. And this was a stunningly simple photo as far as composites go. Only 12 layers.

Running GIMP and Photoshop on the same machine doing the same tasks (not at the same time for obvious reasons) reveals GIMP to be inferior in both interface and speed. Rotating, skewing, scaling, applying transparency, all are at least twice as fast in Photoshop and the interface allows me to do things far faster, and I grew up with GIMP.

I mean, for what it is, a FOSS program, (comma addiction seeping through) GIMP is seriously impressive, but between it and the $stupidexpensive Photoshop there really isn’t a comparison.

Gimp works just as well as Photoshop once you get used to the clunky interface.

It definitely hasn’t kept up with PS, though. I think feature-wise it’s still about the same level as CS4.

Inferior performance, inferior algorithms for things like scaling, rotation, sharpen, etc. etc., inferior featureset (content-aware scale, freehand skewing, etc.), and the ridiculous amount of clicks it takes to do things (WHY in the name of god are rotate, scale and skew all different tools?!). It’s excellent for a free program, but if cost is no object there is no comparison.
And I fucking hate Adobe.

Like I said, it hasn’t kept up with PS. For a few years now they’ve just been releasing tweaks instead of major updates.

I loathe Adobe for charging insane amounts for tiny incremental updates, but just for a simple comparison go into Photoshop and adjust the contrast in something, then do the same thing in GIMP. The algorithms Adobe uses are so much better it’s silly. And there are things like 3D support, animation support (I think GIMP has this but not near as polished), content-aware stuff, etc. and it somehow manages to be the least crash-happy Adobe program I’ve used (that is to say, it waits more than 30 seconds between crashes).

Ever used Flash? I had an error message crash once.

And I don’t bother with contrast, Levels works soooo much better.
