What’s maroon, adorable, small, four wheel drive, and manual? This 2002 Kia Sportage, and one of the most immanently lovable cars I’ve driven on our lot.
I’m far too lazy to actually give numbers for my score, so I’m just going to give impressions.
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
The Sportage has an odd case of “large greenhouse, low beltline, stubby hood” that gives it a cartoonish appearance. It’s not ugly, but it’s not beautiful. More of a lovable weirdo kind of vibe from it.
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
It’s no Buick or Cadillac, but not awful, either. The seats aren’t horribly uncomfortable, everything is about where you would expect it to be, the gear shift is comfortably placed relative to the steering wheel.
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
I have no idea what engine this is, or what power it makes, but if you give a shit then you’re missing the point of this vehicle. It moves along with what my mother would say “a bit of get-up-and-go”, which is perfectly adequate for the purposes of this vehicle.
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
5 glorious speeds and a transfer case. Just the way God intended light SUVs to be. Shifts are smooth and positive, it’s a bit like stirring a jug of pudding but I never found myself hunting for gears or anything. It’s also incredibly hard to drive ‘rough’. Where in my Civic changing gears makes everybody’s head bob no matter how careful I am, I can row gears in the Kia with reckless abandon and be rewarded with buttery smootheness. I enjoyed it.

Seriously, this thing puts a smile on my face. The short little wheelbase, and oddly spacious interior... It’s like a Geo Tracker but with more creature comforts. I’ve heard bad things about the reliability of these but this particular example had no real issues I could find. And I was looking for issues.
I really want one of these to go cruising around the fields in. Won’t be rock crawling any time soon but light off-roading would be a blast with it.

how much is this thing selling for, if I may ask?

The first gen Sportage is actually a really great car, people at KIA are still driving a couple of them. If you take care of it that thing will go for 250-300K miles before something major breaks.

...That engine cover looks soooooo out of place.

We had a ‘99 complete with 4WD and a manual. It was problem free until we sold it at around 130k miles. The 4WD is utterly useless though, until you upgrade to manual locking front hubs.

My friend had one in high school. We put it through absolute hell.
He sold it with 200k miles still running good.

I’m not at work so I honestly have no idea. Probably far too much.
