After a trip to the junk yard I found out that not only did Peugeot change the design of the mounting points, no, they changed something else as well. The old ones were screwed in place. The new ones, well, see the picture. I checked 5 different >1990 205s, they all had this. Useless, I couldn’t get them loose.

I also made a friend. A 1984 Volvo 245.

My Peugeot 205 GTI needs a new parcel shelf, because the old one is hacked up for speakers and has rips. So I found a replacement one. A very rare part without holes. But it doesn’t fit because Peugeot changed the mounting design! Damn you!

What you’re looking at below are the mounting points for the parcel shelf. Left: <1990. Right: >1990. The difference is that the axle is on the mounting points <1990, and on the shelf itself >1990. Why would they do this? My GTI is from 1988, the replacement shelf has the >1990 design.

Upside is that I get to go to a junk yard to remove a set of these mounting points from a >1990 205.

I’m guessing that either the newer design is less prone to breaking, or someone did their sums and found that the post 1990 design saved about 2 centimes per unit.

I installed my new black headliner last weekend. Turns out BMW for no apparent reason changed the way the b-pillar trim is clipped into the body with the facelift, but only at the top. Now I’ll have to respray my grey ones so they fit the rest. And that’s the case for most parts and surprisingly many model years in this car, makes it hard to get the right part.

If it makes you feel any better Madza did some stuff like this from the 89/90 Miata to 91+.

Is that a French make specific yard, or are French cars just hugely popular there?

I remember trying to get a glass rear window for my Mustang and running into a similar problem. The top is held in place by just a zipper. The sides are actually open, straight from the factory, for some reason. The bottom, though, has like ten bolts in a little piece of metal, all of which are rusted in place. The design is sound, but they didn’t plan long-term. I haven’t seen a single convertible fox body whose rear window isn’t rusted in place.

You could drill the rivets out easily. If you make a mess of it go to the next wreck and try again.

Both. This was a French specific yard. But even in yards not specific to French cars, cars are sorted to nationality. Typically German, French, Italian, Asian, Swedish, other. Sometimes Swedish is mixed with other.

True. But I came equipped with screw drivers only, considering the way these things are mounted in my older model car.

It almost makes me wonder - could you design, 3D print, and cast the part you need? It’s a pretty time consuming process, but you’d be able to get the exact shape you’d need.

Maybe. I could get it from UK Ebay as well for about $25-30 or so including shipping, but I’d have preferred to source them from the junk yard.
