I found an 06 SRT8 Magnum near me for around 10k USD but it’s got 150000 miles on it. I’m specifically worried about the auto trans on this one, as the guy has no service records and most replacements I can find are over 3 grand. It’s a fairly common trans being the mercedes 5 speed but idk how much longer it’ll go, even with “no issues” from it.

anyone have any wisdom here?

Ok, I would swap a ZF 8HP auto if I were you.

More reliable, better fuel economy and acceleration.

Looking at a ten year old 150k mile Mopar, especially one that’s prone to being driven hard, you can pretty much expect to sink some pretty decent repair money into it at some point. As long as you’re aware of that and OK with it, why not?

and how do you plan on controling the ZF 8HP? Unless you swap the TCM, PCM, etc etc it’s not worth it. And lets be honest, thats oversimplifying it.

I have some wisdom for you. The NAG1 is pretty bullet proof. Its handle my modded 6.1 just fine. Its got 120k on it. Its not a great performance tranny, but its pretty durable. Besides the tranny is not your biggest concern. Those hemis are know to drop valves and have lift/roller issues. Its fun car for its size and, a good hp value, but plz invest replacing the valve springs and especially lifters if you plan on running it hard. LXforums.com is a better place to go for mopar info. This is not really a big mopar friendly place. If you have more question I'd be happy to shoot you an email.

Ive got 150k on my NAG1, trans is okay, but starting to feel slight slippage under hard acceleration.

No service records and its 10k? Im very wary. Something is wrong with it, no matter what they try and say. The 6.1L is a strong motor, but expect gas mileage to be somewhat poor.

These cars are usually 18-25k in good shape, if youre seeing 10k, I would keep my distance. Find its crash history, or check it in the evening and look for spots where the paint has been taped over or touched up. Check underneath for rust. If it has ANY rust, walk away, these cars should not be rusting, mine has zero rust underneath, and was a northeast car for its whole life.

Suspension should be fine, but wheel bearings will need to get replaced soon. Brakes will need new fluid.

If the car has an EVIC dash, check the gas mileage, you should see around 14-18mpg, thats about all the SRTs will get. Otherwise the front end bushings will need replacing every 20k miles unless you stiffen it up, which costs a lot, Im in the process of doing it myself because there are so many bushings all over the car and the weight takes its toll with the large amount of body roll taking its toll.

I appreciate your reply for sure. I’m goin to keep an eye on his listing for a week or so and see what happens, but the guy sounds exactly how you would expect someone with a slipping 150k mile trans that’s never been serviced to sound. Regardless a swap would probably have to happen so idk if I’m into it. Might wa it a while and drive the beater a little more.

The NAG1 can handle power, thats not the issue, but the torque converters and clutch packs in the high powered builds get replaced, and thats the biggest weak point of these cars. Not having fluids changed on at least a bi-yearly basis also messes with things. Brake fluid, trans fluid, power steering fluid and coolant do not last forever.

Overall though, 10k is a concerning number. The maintenance cost to get it back up to snuff will be very high unless you do the work yourself. These cars are very easy to work on. The only reason Im not doing my suspension myself is because I dont have a press and I cant align it myself, nor do I want to mess up nearly new tires.

I can get near 23 @ 65, but the city driving kills me. Even if I coast as much as I can I best I get is 15 over a week of driving.
